Copyright © 2010 Massachusetts Medical Society. overview Traditionally, internal jugular vein cannulation has been performed with the use of external anatomical landmarks and palpation to guide insertion of the needle into the vessel. However, depending on the operator’s experience and the patient’s anatomy, this procedure may be difficult or unsuccessful. Over the past decade, the increased use of ultrasonography to guide internal jugular vein cannulation has improved success rates, reduced the time required to perform the procedure, and reduced complications.1-3

Long versus short axis ultrasound guided approach for internal jugular vein cannulation: a prospective randomised controlled trial.

AIM The aim of this study was to compare the short and long axis approaches to ultrasound guided right internal jugular vein cannulation with respect to indicators of success. METHODS Patients undergoing cardiac surgery requiring central venous cannulation (99 patients) were randomised to undergo either long or short axis ultrasound guided cannulation of the right internal jugular vein by a s...

Internal Jugular Vein Cannulation: An Ultrasound-Guided Technique Versus a Landmark-Guided Technique

OBJECTIVES To compare the landmark-guided technique versus the ultrasound-guided technique for internal jugular vein cannulation in spontaneously breathing patients. METHODS A total of 380 patients who required internal jugular vein cannulation were randomly assigned to receive internal jugular vein cannulation using either the landmark- or ultrasound-guided technique in Bursa, Uludag Univers...

An Ultrasound Study of Cerebral Venous Drainage after Internal Jugular Vein Catheterization

Objectives. It has been advocated that internal jugular vein (IJV) cannulation in patients at risk for intracranial hypertension could impair cerebral venous return. Aim of this study was to demonstrate that ultrasound-guided IJV cannulation in elective neurosurgical patients is safe and does not impair cerebral venous return. Methods. IJV cross-sectional diameter and flow were measured using t...

Ultrasound-assisted cannulation of the internal jugular vein. A prospective comparison to the external landmark-guided technique.

BACKGROUND Central venous access is an essential part of patient management in many clinical settings and is usually achieved with a blinded, external landmark-guided technique. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether an ultrasound technique can improve on the traditional method. METHODS AND RESULTS We prospectively evaluated an ultrasound-guided method in 302 patients undergoing int...

Central Venous Cannulation of the Internal Jugular Vein Using Ultrasound-Guided and Anatomical Landmark Techniques

BACKGROUND Central venous cannulation is a current and important procedure used in the operating room and intensive care unit. Some studies have shown that the application of ultrasound-guided cannulation can improve the success rate of surgery, save time, reduce the number of required needlesticks, and mitigate many complications compared to anatomical landmark-guided cannulation. OBJECTIVES...
