چکیده

for each media condition as the extent of survival and reproduction (fitness) of the deletion strain relative to the pool of all strains grown and measured collectively. Fitness values (f) of 1.0 indicate no difference between a single strain and the pool average for that condition; f , 1.0 indicates that the strain is less fit, and f . 1.0 indicates that the strain is more fit than the pool average. In addition, we added to our analysis 1,060 ORFs that each had a lethal effect when deleted and assayed in YPD; we used only lethal deletions that could be inferred as lethal from both of the two studies conducted. We divided all genes into four groups according to the f value as follows: (1) if f . 0.95 for all five media conditions, the deletion has a weak or no fitness effect in all conditions; (2) if 0.8 # fmin , 0.95, where fmin is the smallest f value for all five growth conditions, the deletion has a moderate effect; (3) if 0 , f min , 0.8, the deletion has a strong effect; and (4) if the deletion is lethal, we set f 1⁄4 0.

Evidences for increased expression variation of duplicate genes in budding yeast: from cis- to trans-regulation effects

Duplicate genes tend to have a more variable expression program than singleton genes, which was thought to be an important way for the organism to respond and adapt to fluctuating environment. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms driving such expression variation remain largely unexplored. In this work, we first rigorously confirmed that duplicate genes indeed have higher gene expressio...

LETTER Protein Subcellular Relocalization in the Evolution of Yeast Singleton and Duplicate Genes

Gene duplication is the primary source of new genes, but the mechanisms underlying the functional divergence and retention of duplicate genes are not well understood. Because eukaryotic proteins are localized to subcellular structures and localization can be altered by a single amino acid replacement, it was recently proposed that protein subcellular relocalization (PSR) plays an important role...

Evolutionary Persistence of Functional Compensation by Duplicate Genes in Arabidopsis

Knocking out a gene from a genome often causes no phenotypic effect. This phenomenon has been explained in part by the existence of duplicate genes. However, it was found that in mouse knockout data duplicate genes are as essential as singleton genes. Here, we study whether it is also true for the knockout data in Arabidopsis. From the knockout data in Arabidopsis thaliana obtained in our study...

Higher duplicability of less important genes in yeast genomes.

Gene duplication plays an important role in evolution because it is the primary source of new genes. Many recent studies showed that gene duplicability varies considerably among genes. Several considerations led us to hypothesize that less important genes have higher rates of successful duplications, where gene importance is measured by the fitness reduction caused by the deletion of the gene. ...

The complex relationship of 1 gene duplication and

In yeast and worm, duplicate genes overlap in 7 function so that deleting one of a pair from the 8 genome is less likely to be lethal than deleting a 9 singleton gene. By contrast, previous analyses 10 showed that mouse duplicate genes were as 11 essential as singletons. We show that the 12 relationship between gene duplication and 13 essentiality is complex in multicellular organisms, 14 with ...
