چکیده

In the last 15 years several electron-microscope studies of visceral and vascular smooth muscle of vertebrates have been published (see reviews by Dewey & Barr, 1968, and Burnstock, 1970). The presence of bottle-shaped invaginations of the sarcolemmal membrane (micropinocvtotic vesicles, caveolae intracellulares) (Caesar, Edwards & Ruska, 1957) is well known. However, it is generally accepted that sarcoplasmic reticulum is poorly developed in smooth muscle, especially when compared with striated muscle (Mark, 1956; Caesar et al. 1957; Prosser, Burnstock & Kahn, i960; Dewey & Barr, 1968). In this paper the occurrence of well developed sarcoplasmic reticulum in the intestinal smooth muscle of guinea-pig is reported.

Electron microscope tomography: further demonstration of nanocontacts between caveolae and smooth muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum

A spatial relationship between caveolae and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in smooth muscle cells (SMC) was previously reported in computer-assisted three-dimensional reconstruction from transmission electron microscope serial sections. The knowledge of the three-dimensional organization of the cortical space of SMC is essential to understand caveolae function at the cellular level. Cellular tomog...

Connection of microtubules, caveolae, mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum in the taenia coli of guinea-pigs.

Microtubules were identified in the subsarcolemmal area of smooth muscle cell in the taenia coli of guinea-pigs. They may traverse myofibrils but more frequently they run parallel with the long axis of the cell. The microtubules were often in contact with sarcolemmal caveolae. A caveola appeared to contact with an end of a microtubule or with the outer membrane of a mitochondrion. Occasionally ...

Caveolar nanospaces in smooth muscle cells

Caveolae, specialized membrane nanodomains, have a key role in signaling processes, including calcium handling in smooth muscle cells (SMC). We explored the three-dimensional (3D) architecture of peripheral cytoplasmic space at the nanoscale level and the close spatial relationships between caveolae, sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), and mitochondria, as ultrastructural basis for excitation-contract...

Caveolae from canine airway smooth muscle contain the necessary components for a role in Ca handling

Darby, Peter J., C. Y. Kwan, and Edwin E. Daniel. Caveolae from canine airway smooth muscle contain the necessary components for a role in Ca handling. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 279: L1226–L1235, 2000.—To explain that bronchial smooth muscle undergoes sustained agonist-induced contractions in a Ca-free medium, we hypothesized that caveolae in the plasma membrane (PM) contain protected ...

Caveolae and calcium handling, a review and a hypothesis

Caveolae are associated with molecules crucial for calcium handling. This review considers the roles of caveolae in calcium handling for smooth muscle and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). Structural studies showed that the plasma membrane calcium pump (PMCA), a sodium-calcium exchanger (NCX1), and a myogenic nNOS appear to be colocalized with caveolin 1, the main constituent of these caveolae...
