chest owing to the pain caused by movement of the pectoral muscles. The axillary glands were slightly enlarged. The patient said he was bitten by a rat about fifteen days before. In about four days a small red papule appeared at the site of injury. This became pustular and burst, producing a small ulcer the size of an eight-anna piece, which subsequently increased in size. He then applied quicklime as a caustic, but the ulcer spread till the loth July, when it attained its maximum size as above described.
