Stochastic approximation learning for mixtures of multivariate elliptical distributions

چکیده
Most of current approaches to mixture modeling consider mixture components from a few families of probability distributions, in particular from the Gaussian family. The reasons of these preferences can be traced to their training algorithms, typically versions of the Expectation-Maximization (EM) method. The reestimation equations needed by this method become very complex as the mixture components depart from the simplest cases. Here we propose to use a stochastic approximation method for probabilistic mixture learning. Under this method it is straightforward to train mixtures composed by a wide range of mixture components from different families. Hence, it is a flexible alternative for mixture learning. Experimental results are presented to show the probability density and missing value estimation capabilities of our proposal.

Stochastic approximation for background modelling
Many background modelling approaches are based on mixtures of multivariate Gaussians with diagonal covariance matrices. This often yields good results, but complex backgrounds are not adequately captured, and postprocessing techniques are needed. Here we propose the use of mixtures of uniform distributions and multivariate Gaussians with full covariance matrices. These mixtures are able to cope...
متن کاملEstimation in nonlinear mixed-effects models using heavy-tailed distributions
Nonlinear mixed–effects models are very useful to analyze repeated measures data and are used in a variety of applications. Normal distributions for random effects and residual errors are usually assumed, but such assumptions make inferences vulnerable to the presence of outliers. In this work, we introduce an extension of a normal nonlinear mixed–effects model considering a subclass of ellipti...
متن کاملIdentifiability of finite mixtures of elliptical distributions
We present general results on the identifiability of finite mixtures of elliptical distributions under conditions on the characteristic generators or density generators. Examples include the multivariate t distribution, symmetric stable laws, exponential power and Kotz distributions. In each case, the shape parameter is allowed to vary in the mixture, in addition to the location vector and the ...
متن کاملA characterization of elliptical distributions and some optimality properties of principal components for functional data
As in the multivariate setting, the class of elliptical distributions on separable Hilbert spaces serves as an important vehicle and reference point for the development and evaluation of robust methods in functional data analysis. In this paper, we present a simple characterization of elliptical distributions on separable Hilbert spaces, namely we show that the class of elliptical distributions...

ii I certify that I have read this dissertation and certify that in my opinion it is fully adequate, in scope and in quality, as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Stochastic dependence arises in many fields including electrical grid reliability, net-work/internet traffic analysis, environmental and agricultural impact assessment, and financial risk management. Models in the...
