Creative Destruction and Productive Preemption

چکیده
We develop a theory of commercialization mode (entry or sale) of entrepreneurial inventions into oligopoly, and show that an invention of higher quality is more likely to be sold (or licensed) to an incumbent due to strategic product market e¤ects on the sales price. Moreover, preemptive acquisitions by incumbents are shown to stimulate the process of creative destruction by increasing the entrepreneurial e¤ort allocated to high-quality invention projects. Using detailed data on patents granted to small rms and individuals, we nd evidence that high-quality inventions are often sold, and that they are sold under bidding competition. Creative Destruction and Uncertainty over the Business Cycle∗
Recessions are associated with increases in uncertainty. This paper shows that a simple model of creative destruction, in which new productive businesses push out old obsolete ones, produces increases in measured uncertainty during recessionary periods even without time-variation in second moments of exogenous shocks. Moreover, the suggested channel is also borne out by the data. Using an estab...

How Destructive Is Creative Destruction? The Costs of Worker Displacement We analyze short and long-term effects of worker displacement. Our focus is on prime-age male workers displaced from Norwegian manufacturing plants. We find that displacement increases the probability of exiting the labor force by about 5 percentage points. This indicates that studies using data that do not incorporate wo...
متن کاملModifying the Black-Scholes model to valuate preemption right
In this paper, we try and valuate preemption rights by modifying the Black-Scholes model, which is widely used to valuate options and other derivatives. Here we first present the basics of the Black-Scholes model and then we discus modification of the model to be fit for preemption right valuation. At the end, we valuate four of the preemptive rights using the proposed model

متن کاملScheduling a constellation of agile earth observation satellites with preemption
In this paper, we consider a scheduling problem for a set of agile Earth observation satellites for scanning different parts of the Earth’s surface. We assume that preemption is allowed to prevent repetitive images and develop four different preemption policies. Scheduling is done for the imaging time window and transmission time domain to the Earth stations as well. The value of each picture ...
