چکیده

Additional non-PCV7 serotypes associated with antibiotic resistance include serotypes that were associated with antibioticresistance prior to the use of PCV7. These include an increase in nasopharyngeal colonisation and disease due to serotype 19A, both following, and in the absence of, PCV immunisation. Although transmission and disease from serotype 19A are likely to decline following immunisation with PCV13, pneumococcal disease associated with antibiotic-resistance due to serotypes not included in 13-valent PCV (PCV13) is likely to persist, albeit at lower rates. The non-PCV13 serotypes already identified to be associated with antibiotic-resistant strains of pneumococci in the pre-PCV13 era will possibly undergo selective expansion, and emerge as the new dominant serotypes associated with antibiotic non-susceptibility in the PCV13 era. Comprehensive control of disease from antibiotic non-susceptible pneumococci is likely to require a pneumococcal vaccine that will be effective in preventing nasopharyngeal colonisation from the vast majority of disease-causing serotypes, coupled with the judicious use of antibiotics.

Characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae Strains Colonizing Upper Respiratory Tract of Healthy Preschool Children in Poland

Antibiotic resistant and invasive pneumococci may spread temporally and locally in day care centers (DCCs). We examined 267 children attending four DCCs located in the same city and 70 children staying at home in three seasons (autumn, winter, and spring) to determine prevalence, serotype distribution, antibiotic resistance patterns, and transmission of pneumococcal strains colonizing upper res...

Antibiotic resistance and the potential impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in young children throughout the world, causing both invasive (meningitis, bacteraemia) and non-invasive (pneumonia, acute otitis media, sinusitis) infections. Over the past few decades, the global emergence of antibiotic-resistant pneumococcal strains has complicated disease management. Thus, healthcare practitioners have beg...

Acute otitis media caused by antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in southern Israel: implication for immunizing with conjugate vaccines.

The potential coverage of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci causing acute otitis media (AOM) by 7-, 9-, and 11-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccines was studied in southern Israel. A total of 876 cases of pneumococcal AOM were studied in the context of various clinical conditions. Of the isolates, 68% were resistant to >/=1 drug, 61% were resistant to penicillin, and 13% were resistant to >/=3 ...

Pneumococcal carriage and antibiotic susceptibility patterns from two cross-sectional colonization surveys among children aged <5 years prior to the introduction of 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine — Kenya, 2009–2010

BACKGROUND Pneumococci are spread by persons with nasopharyngeal colonization, a necessary precursor to invasive disease. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines can prevent colonization with vaccine serotype strains. In 2011, Kenya became one of the first African countries to introduce the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) into its national immunization program. Serial cross-sectional c...

23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine; core references

OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of pneumococcal isolates obtained from patients with invasive pneumococcal disease in The Gambia. METHODS: Pneumococcal isolates were obtained from children aged < or =6 years with invasive pneumococcal disease during a Haemophilus influenzae vaccine effectiveness study (1997-2002) and from patients with invasive pneumococcal disease admitted to the M...
