In this paper, we describe a mathematical framework for modeling and simulation of highway traac from a wireless network's point of view. The global movement of vehicles on a highway is expressed by partial diierential equations. The highway may have exits and entrances as well as a time and location dependent velocity proole. In addition to movement, also the communication activity of the vehicles is considered. Vehicles can have calls in progress or can be inactive. Active vehicles may run multimedia applications with diierent classes of data. Using this model , we can simulate dynamics in a wireless network in case of variable highway traac conditions. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the use of the proposed model for wireless networks design.
