چکیده

Robert c. Eaton E. P. O. Biology University of Colorado Boulder, Co. 80309 We provide a computational description of the function of the Mauthner system. This is the brainstem circuit which initiates faststart escapes in teleost fish in response to sounds. Our simulations, using back propagation in a realistically constrained feedforward network, have generated hypotheses which are directly interpretable in terms of the activity of the auditory nerve fibers, the principle cells of the system and their associated inhibitory neurons.

Mauthner and reticulospinal responses to the onset of acoustic pressure and acceleration stimuli.

We determined how the Mauthner cell and other large, fast-conducting reticulospinal neurons of the goldfish responded to acoustic stimuli likely to be important in coordinating body movements underlying escape. The goal was to learn about the neurophysiological responses to these stimuli and the underlying processes of sensorimotor integration. We compared the intracellularly recorded postsynap...

The octavolateralis system and Mauthner cell: interactions and questions.

This paper is an overview of some of the major points to arise in the accompanying contributions of this special symposium issue. The symposium papers arose out of discussions among investigators interested in the inner ear and Mauthner cell, with the focus on hydrodynamic components that activate the Mauthner cell through the octavolateralis system. The intention of the symposium was to invest...

Phase encoding in the Mauthner system: implications in left-right sound source discrimination.

The paired teleost Mauthner (M)-cells and their associated network serve as an excellent system to study the biophysical basis of decision making. In teleosts, an abrupt sound evokes an M-spike, triggering a C-start escape that is usually directed away from a sound source. The response latency is minimized by electrical synapses between auditory afferents and the M-cell lateral dendrite. Here, ...

Role of the lateral line mechanosensory system in directionality of goldfish auditory evoked escape response.

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) escape responses to sudden auditory stimuli are mediated by a pair of reticulospinal neurons, the Mauthner (M-) cells, which integrate mechanosensory inputs from the inner ear and the lateral line (LL) to initiate a fast directional response away from the aversive stimulus. This behavior is context dependent; when near an obstruction the fish may rather turn towards...

function in executing fast escape, however, the Mauthner system has been evolutionarily malleable, having been incorporated into a range of modified C-start behaviours. For example, goldfish use C-starts during prey capture as well as predator avoidance. Similarly, archer fish have evolved a dramatic prey capture mechanism, whereby the retrieval of insects dislodged from vegetation by a spit of...
