Rethinking Design Process: Using 3D Digital Models as an Interface in Collaborative Session
نویسنده
چکیده
Th is paper describes a pilot study for an alternative design process by integrating a designer-user collaborative session with digital models. Th e collaborative session took place in a 3D AutoCAD class for a real world project. Th e 3D models served as an interface for designer-user collaboration during the design process. Students not only learned how to use 3D AutoCAD, but also experienced a collaborative session by designing a conference room. Th is paper also compares traditional space planning process and alternative space planning process, as well as student work and feedback from the collaborative session. Recommendations were made for future course improvements when a real world project is used in the curriculum. Th is paper also discusses changes in design process and the role of designers based on the collaborative

Do Tangible User Interfaces Impact Spatial Cognition in Collaborative Design?
Developments in digital design workbenches that combine Augmented Reality (AR) systems and tangible user interfaces (TUIs) on a horizontal display surface provide a new kind of physical and digital environment for collaborative design. The combination of tangible interaction with AR display techniques change the dynamics of the collaboration and have an impact on the designers’ perception of 3D...
متن کاملKinetic Façade Design Using 3D Scanning to Convert Physical Models into Digital Models
In designing a kinetic façade, it is hard for the designer to make digital models due to its complex geometry with motion. This paper aims to present a methodology of converting a point cloud of a physical model into a single digital model with a certain topology and motion. The method uses a Microsoft Kinect sensor, and color markers were defined and applied to three paper folding-inspired des...

Over the past decades, urban growth has been known as a worldwide phenomenon that includes widening process and expanding pattern. While the cities are changing rapidly, their quantitative analysis as well as decision making in urban planning can benefit from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) digital models. The recent developments in imaging and non-imaging sensor technologies, s...
متن کاملPAC-C3D: A New Software Architectural Model for Designing 3D Collaborative Virtual Environments
We propose PAC-C3D as a new software model for 3D Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE). This model merges the results from two research fields: distribution models for CVE and HCI design for computer-supported cooperative work. PAC-C3D proposes to describe each part of a shared virtual object through explicit interfaces to ensure a strong separation between the core functions of a virtual e...
متن کاملCollaborative 3D Workspace and Interaction Techniques for Synchronous Distributed Product Design Reviews
Collaboration has become an essential part of the design process due to increased complexity in design projects and internationalized business environments. There are many cases where professionals from different organizations have to collaborate in order to develop a competitive product in a short period of time at a low cost. Moreover, the advancement in transportation and communication techn...
