Steady state and the chemostat in ecology

چکیده
If translated with a slight bias: “Who wouldn’t praise a laureate, but would you read him? No. Accepting praise, he still prefers you’d understand him though,” Lessing’s lament appears to apply to science as well as to poetry and seems to be as timely today as it was in the days of Klopstock. It deplores assuming an eminent man’s idea without really taking the pain of reading his original writings and perceiving their meaning in the proper perspective. As a corollary, concepts arise and turn into methodologies which, although patched with respectable names, often do not hold water. The laureate in question here is Jaques Monod who reported (Monod 1942) that the growth rate of bacteria in certain culture media was controlled by a substrate (carbon or nitrogen source) as the sole limiting factor within a certain range of concentration. For a “data-fitting” mathematical function he proposed the most simple one, containing the constants a and b : x = ay/b + y, or in its common form: E,L= p,,$/K, + S (p-growth rate, ,u,-maximum growth rate, S-concentration of the growth-limiting substrate, &-saturation or affinity constant+ubstrate concentration at

Nonlinear population dynamics in the chemostat
tinuous stirred tank bioreactor, was independently invented by Jacques Monod1 and by Aaron Novick and Leo Szilard,2,3 who also coined the term chemostat. Its inventors conceived that this device provided a convenient way to study a bacterial population in the steady state, letting the experimenter adjust growth rate and external parameters, such as temperature or pH level. Novick and Szilard we...
متن کاملCharacterization of Phosphate Membrane Transport in Saccharomyces cerevisiae CEN.PK113-5D under Low-Phosphate Conditions Using Aerobic Continuous Culture
Two different growth media, namely complex and defined media, were used to examine establishment of steady-state conditions in phosphate-limited culture system of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CEN.PK113-5D strain. Using the defined growth medium, it was possible to obtain steady state condition in the continuous culture. The effect of phosphate concentration on the growth of S. cerevisiae in pho...
متن کاملLong-Term Changes in Chemostat Cultures of Cytophaga johnsonae.
Long-term studies with a gliding, heterotrophic bacterium, Cytophaga johnsonae, were conducted in a glucose-limited chemostat at a high and a low dilution rate. To test the stability of the steady state during long-term experiments the following parameters were monitored: optical density, glucose concentration, glucose uptake potential, ATP content of the cells, and plate counts on two differen...
متن کاملGlobal Stability in a Well Known Delayed Chemostat Model
In this paper, we consider the global stability problem for the well known delayed chemostat model introduced and studied by Freedman, So and Waltman(1989). The difficulty of studying this open problem is that this delayed system has no negative feedback in the microbial populations. By a novel way of constructing a proper Liapunov functional and explicit estimates of eventual upper and lower b...
متن کاملAbout Transgressive Over-Yielding in the Chemostat
We show that for certain configurations of two chemostats fed in parallel, the presence of two different species in each tank can improve the yield of the whole process, compared to the same configuration having the same species in each volume. This leads to a (so-called) “transgressive over-yielding” due to spatialization. Key-words. Chemostat, steady-state, optimization, over-yielding.
متن کاملNutritional homeostasis in batch and steady-state culture of yeast.
We studied the physiological response to limitation by diverse nutrients in batch and steady-state (chemostat) cultures of S. cerevisiae. We found that the global pattern of transcription in steady-state cultures in limiting phosphate or sulfate is essentially identical to that of batch cultures growing in the same medium just before the limiting nutrient is completely exhausted. The massive st...
