چکیده

First-principles calculations of the reflection probabilities for Fermi surface electrons at Cr/Fe interfaces are used to compute the strength of the oscillatory exchange coupling in Cr/Fe multilayers. These calculations show that critical spanning vectors across the N -centered ellipsoids of the Cr Fermi surface cause the long period coupling for (001), (110), and (211) interfaces. The periods of these spanning vectors, when extracted from the experimental Fermi surface, agree with experimentally measured periods. 75.70.-i,73.20.Dx,75.30.Et,71.18.+y Typeset using REVTEX

Exchange Coupling in Magnetic Multilayers Grown on Iron Whiskers (invited)

Meaningful tests of theoretical predictions of magnetic multilayer properties require the fabrication of multilayers with nearly the same atomic scale precision as the theoretical models. Multilayers grown epitaxially on single crystal Fe whisker substrates come very close to this ideal standard. We have investigated the growth, magnetic structure, and exchange coupling of Fe/(Ag, Au, Cr, Mn, V...

Spin-Dependent Interface Transmission and Reflection in Magnetic Multilayers

First-principles calculations of transmission and reflection from Ag/Fe, Au/Fe, Cu/Co, and Cu/Ni interfaces show very strong spin dependence that differs significantly from expectations based on free electron approximations. The results can be used to understand both the giant magnetoresistance and the oscillatory exchange coupling observed in magnetic multilayers of these materials. The spin d...

Exchange Coupling and Magnetization Profiles of Binary and Ternary Magnetic Multilayers

Within a spin-polarized LMTO approach in the Atomic-Sphere approximation we calculate ab initio the magnetic properties of various binary and ternary multilayers composed of Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, V and Cu. The emphasis lies on the indirect exchange interaction of the magnetic sandwiches across the antiferromagnetic or non-magnetic spacers, and on the profiles of the intrinsic resp. induced magnetic m...

Structure and magnetism of Fe/Si multilayers grown by ion-beam sputtering.

Ion-beam sputtering has been used to prepare Fe/Si multilayers on a variety of substrates and over a wide range of temperatures. Small-angle x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy experiments show that the layers are heavily intermixed although a composition gradient is maintained. When the spacer layer is an amorphous iron silicide, the magnetic properties of the multilayers ar...

Temperature dependence of the magnetic interlayer coupling in Fe/Cr multilayers

Detailed SQUID magnetic measurements were performed in two series of [-Fe3o A/Cr, A] x 10 multilayers, in the temperature range 5-300 K. These series were prepared by sputtering on different substrates: MgO(1 0 0) and Si(1 0 0). The interlayer magnetic coupling strength (J,~_) was obtained from hysteresis cycles measured at each temperature. Our results show that Ji2 versus T behaves according ...
