چکیده

This paper discusses lower bounds for proof length, especially as measured by number of steps (inferences). We give the first publicly known proof of Gödel’s claim that there is superrecursive (in fact, unbounded) proof speedup of (i + 1)-st order arithmetic over i-th order arithmetic, where arithmetic is formalized in Hilbert-style calculi with + and · as function symbols or with the language of PRA. The same results are established for any weakly schematic formalization of higher-order logic; this allows all tautologies as axioms and allows all generalizations of axioms as axioms. Our first proof of Gödel’s claim is based on self-referential sentences; we give a second proof that avoids the use of self-reference based loosely on a method of Statman’s.

Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems

Gödel’s two incompleteness theorems [2] are formalised, following a careful presentation by Świerczkowski [3], in the theory of hereditarily finite sets. This represents the first ever machine-assisted proof of the second incompleteness theorem. Compared with traditional formalisations using Peano arithmetic [1], coding is simpler, with no need to formalise the notion of multiplication (let alo...

IPM-Isfahan workshop on Various Aspects of Modality

Paradoxes are amazing puzzles in philosophy (and mathematics), and they can be interesting when turned into proofs and theorems (in mathematics and logic). For example, Russell's paradox, which collapsed Frege's foundations of mathematics, is now a classical theorem in set theory, and implies that no set of all sets can exist. Or, as another example, the Liar paradox has turned into Tarski's th...

Sign Effect, Speedup – Delay Asymmetry and Gender Effect In the Tehran Stock Exchange

The present study first investigates the asymmetry of speedup - delay (gain and loss) and Sign Effect in Tehran Stock Exchange, then examine the effect of gender on the discount rate and explain it with the loss aversion. The sample is 403 investors in Tehran Stock Exchange, and the nonparametric Tests are used to test the research hypotheses. The research results show that there is an asymmetr...

The impact of the incompleteness theorems on mathematics

In addition to this being the centenary of Kurt Gödel's birth, January marked 75 years since the publication (1931) of his stunning incompleteness theorems. Though widely known in one form or another by practicing mathematicians, and generally thought to say something fundamental about the limits and potentialities of mathematical knowledge, the actual importance of these results for mathematic...

Incompleteness in a General Setting

Full proofs of the Gödel incompleteness theorems are highly intricate affairs. Much of the intricacy lies in the details of setting up and checking the properties of a coding system representing the syntax of an object language (typically, that of arithmetic) within that same language. These details are seldom illuminating and tend to obscure the core of the argument. For this reason a number o...
