چکیده

In recent years, natural language generation research has begun to mature rapidly. It has witnessed both the appearance of sophisticated oo-the-shelf surface realizations systems and the development in the knowledge representation community of knowledge bases in a variety of domains. However, knowledge bases typically employ a logic formalism while the state-of-the-art surface realizer, Fuf, employs a uniication-based formalism to encode input expressions, grammatical knowledge, and lexical knowledge. As a result, bridging the gap between domain knowledge and linguistic knowledge has become a critical problem for natural language generation. We have designed a framework for functional realization that exhibits linguistic, domain, and task generality. It has been implemented in Fare, a robust functional realization system that translates logic-based representations found in knowledge bases to uniication-based representations that encode case assignments and phrasal constituent embeddings. Given a message speciication, Fare exploits lexical and grammatical annotations on knowledge base objects to construct functional descriptions, which are then converted to text by the Fuf surface generator. To study the generality of the approach, Fare was empirically evaluated in the context of the three diierent domains and two diierent applications. The results of these evaluations are encouraging.

Performing aggregation and ellipsis using discourse structures

This article describes the generation of aggregated and elliptic sentences, using Dependency Trees connected by rhetorical relations as input. The system we have developed can generate both hypotactic and paratactic constructions with appropriate cue words, and various forms of ellipsis such as Gapping and Conjunction Reduction. We contend that Dependency Trees connected by rhetorical relations...

Translation of Power and Solidarity Pronouns in Qur’anic Rhetoric

Translation of the Holy Quran can be difficult for translators in terms of accuracy and translatability. Sometimes translators fail to render the Quranic thoughts because of the lack of language features in target languages. This results in an unfavorable interpretation. One of the challenging aspects of translating Quran is reference switching as rhetorical devices, which are widespread i...

Sentence Synthesis in Machine Translation

We report work in progress on a complex system generating Czech sentences expressing the meaning of input syntactic-semantic structures. Such component is usually referred to as a realizer in the domain of Natural Language Generation. Existing realizers usually take advantage of a background linguistic theory. We introduce the Functional Generative Description, a framework of our choice conceiv...

Chinese Generation in a Spoken Dialogue Translation System

A Chinese generation module in a speech to speech dialogue translation system is presented he:re. The input of the generation module is the underspecified semantic representation. Its design is strongly influenced by the underspecification of the inlmtS and the necessity of real-time and robust processing. We design an efficient generation system comprising a task-oriented microplanner and a ge...

Wide Coverage Symbolic Surface Realization

Recent evaluation techniques applied to corpusbased systems have been introduced that can predict quantitatively how well surface realizers will generate unseen sentences in isolation. We introduce a similar method for determining the coverage on the Fuf/Surge symbolic surface realizer, report that its coverage and accuracy on the Penn TreeBank is higher than that of a similar statistics-based ...
