Three-axis optical force plate for studies in small animal locomotor mechanics
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of force plates to measure whole-body locomotor mechanics is a well-established technique. However, commercially available force plates are not sensitive enough for use on small-bodied vertebrates or invertebrates. The standard design for singleand multiple-axis, high-sensitivity force plates built by individual research groups uses semiconductor foil strain gauges to measure deflections; yet foil strain gauges are highly temperature and position sensitive, resulting in a drifting base line and nonlinear responses. I present here a design for a three-axis optical force plate that was successfully calibrated to measure forces as small as 1.5 mN and is capable of determining the position of center of pressure with a mean error of 0.07 cm along the X axis and 0.13 cm along the Y axis. Using optical sensors instead of foil strain gauges to measure deflection, this force plate is not subject to temperature-related drift and is more robust against slight positioning inaccuracies. This force plate was used to measure forces produced by amphibious fishes weighing less than 2 g as they jumped off the force platform. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2202910

Finite Element Simulation of Contact Mechanics of Cancer Cells in Manipulation Based on Atomic Force Microscopy
The theory of contact mechanics deals with stresses and deformations which arise when the surfaces of two solid bodies are brought into contact. In elastic deformation contact occurs over a finite area. A regular method for determining the dimensions of this area is Hertz Contact Model. Appearance of atomic force microscope results in introduction of Contact ...
متن کاملDynamics of nonlinear rectangular plates subjected to an orbiting mass based on shear deformation plate theory
In this paper, transverse and longitudinal vibration of nonlinear plate under exciting of orbiting mass is considered based on first-order shear deformation theory. The nonlinear governing equation of motion are discretized by the finite element method in combination with Newmark’s time integration scheme under von Karman strain-displacement assumptions. For validation of method and formulation...
متن کاملSensing characteristics of an optical three-axis tactile sensor under combined loading
This paper describes precision enhancement of an optical three-axis tactile sensor capable of detecting both normal force and tangential force. The sensor’s single cell consists of a columnar feeler and 2-by-2 conical feelers. We have derived equations to precisely estimate the three-axis force from the area-sum and area-difference of the conical feelers’ contact areas by taking into account wr...
متن کاملStrain Hardening Analysis for M-P Interaction in Metallic Beam of T-Section
This paper derives kinematic admissible bending moment – axial force (M-P) interaction relations for mild steel by considering strain hardening idealisations. Two models for strain hardening – Linear and parabolic have been considered, the parabolic model being closer to the experiments. The interaction relations can predict strains, which is not possible in a rigid, perfectly plastic idealizat...

This paper deals with the determination of the effect of varying material properties on the value of the stress intensity factors, KI and KII, for anisotropic plates containing cracks and subjected to a temperature change. Problems involving cracks and body forces, as well as thermal loads are analysed. The quadratic isoperimetric element formulation is utilized, and SIFs may be directly obtain...
