Tuning L ATEX to one’s own needs

I will not conceal that the topic brought up in the article has been discussed many times over, especially on mailing lists — but it continues to come back. There are numerous methods of adjusting LTEX to particular typographic needs. I am not going to advocate for a particular, the only proper, way of tackling low-level modifications of LTEX macros, but will be suggesting several ways of handling such situations. As usual, there are many ways. The choice depends on how well one masters the tools. Also, I will restrict myself to selected areas of typesetting, those where adjustments are most often needed.
