چکیده

The conflict of articulatory targets may result in neutralization of phonological oppositions, for instance in languages, where prevoiced and nonaspirated voiceless plosives constitute voicing contrast, voicing may be ceased leading to partial or entire devoiced plosives. The question has been arisen by several studies, whether the neutralization is entire regarding the phonetic voicing (type, ratio, duration etc.), and whether and how ―additional‖ features (like vowel duration, consonant duration, vowel voicing etc.) may hold at least partially the contrast of the counterparts. The present study aims to serve some further information on these questions for intervocalic plosives on the basis of Hungarian. Results show that devoicing of [+voice] plosives is not frequent, as expected due to the intervocalic position, however, [-voice] plosives may get partially voiced, therefore partially neutralizing the contrast.

Auditory Perception Influences Speech Motor Learning

The present study investigated the effect of auditory training on the acquisition of a new articulatory skill. German speakers were trained to imitate a three-way voicing contrast in intervocalic bilabial plosives. Production training was either accompanied by perceptual training with all three distinctions (full training) or only the native two-way contrast (partial training). We found that fu...

Voicing in Russian Stops: Cross-linguistic implications

This paper presents the results of an investigation of voicing in utterance-initial and intervocalic stops in monolingual Russian speakers. Prevoicing was found in over 97% of the lenis stops; over 97% of the intervocalic stops were fully voiced. Utterance-initial fortis stops were pronounced as voiceless unaspirated and had short positive VOT. Intervocalic fortis stops were completely voiceles...

Age-Dependent Differences in the Neutralization of the Intervocalic Voicing Contrast: Evidence from an Apparent-Time Study on East Franconian

The main aim of the present study was to investigate the extent to which East Franconian speakers neutralize the voicing opposition in intervocalic stops when they produce a variety of Standard German. A second aim was to test whether young and old speakers differ in their extent of neutralization and tend to a more standard-like pronunciation. We analyzed contrast maintenance by means of the v...

Gestural coordination differences between intervocalic simple and geminate plosives in Moroccan Arabic: An EMA investigation

Based on EMA data (3 speakers), we investigates the articulatory strategies responsible for the singleton/geminate plosive contrast in Moroccan Arabic. Our data showed that closing and opening phases of the geminate gesture share several articulatory properties with those of its single cognate. These results and our analyses of V-to-V and V-to-C temporal coordination are consistent with the hyp...

Perception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers

Perception and production of English cues to plosive voicing by native Mandarin speakers" (2013). Undergraduate Honors Theses. Paper 429. Abstract The acquisition of non-native sounds is a prominent feature of second language acquisition.
