چکیده

In a country like Uganda where syphilis is common, yaws occurs, and many of the diseases known to cause false positive Wassermann reactions (such as malaria, leprosy, relapsing fever, smallpox vaccination, trypanosomiasis, lymphogranuloma venereum, and infectious hepatitis) exist, it seemed desirable to obtain some background information about the frequency of positive serological tests for syphilis in the general population in order that the results of tests on individual patients might be evaluated. As the Treponema pallidum immobilization (TPI) test was not available, the validity of the Wassermann reaction (WR) was assessed against the Reiter protein complement-fixation (RPCF) test. Personal experience in Great Britain had shown that the majority of sera giving a positive WR but a negative RPCF test also have a negative TPI test, and a large series of tests has shown the RPCF test to be highly specific (Sequeira 1960). For the purpose of this study a positive WR unsupported by a positive RPCF test is regarded as a biological false positive (BFP) reaction. As was anticipated, BFP reactions occurred with a considerable proportion of sera tested and this paper is mainly concerned with an investigation of the cause of these reactions.

False positive Wassermann reaction associated with evidence of enterovirus infection.

A large proportion of high titre Coxsackie B5 complement-fixation tests was detected among sera giving false positive Wassermann reactions during 1969. Echo virus type 9 proved to be the prevailing enterovirus and is one of those which induces the formation of antibody to Coxsackie B5. One case of Echo virus type 9 meningitis is presented which produced a false positive Wassermann reaction and ...

False Positive Serologic Reactions for Syphilis in Eosinophilia

Greval (1940) reported that some cases of ' Eosinophilia ' give false positive Wassermann reaction. More recently Menon (1945) and D'Abrera and Stork (1946) reported similar reactions in tropical eosinophilia. It was proposed to record results of Wassermann reaction and Kahn test in all cases of eosinophilia as a part of the investigation into the incidence of false positive serologic reactions...

Serological Wassermann problem cases.

The subject of Wassermann "Problem" cases is of interest not only to the serologist but to the physician or clinician, upon whom devolves the responsibility for diagnosis. In the past there has been too little critical judgment by clinicians in assessing the results of the Wassermann reaction, and many practitioners may still regard a positive Wassermann reaction as in itself a diagnosis of syp...

Chronic biological false-positive reactions to serological tests for syphilis in blood donors.

Problem sera from 375 blood donors were investigated for biological false-positive reactions to serological tests for syphilis. Problem sera are those sera in which submitting laboratories have found a reactive result to a screening test for syphilis. On each serum a cardiolipin Wassermann reaction, a Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test, a Reiter protein-complement fixation test, a Trepon...

The incidence and demonstration of biologic reactions in routine Wassermann tests.

For the past 30 years the M.R.C. No. 1, with its later development the Harrison-Wyler method, has been the premier Wassermann technique in Great Britain. It is probably still the most commonly used, though now being superseded by methods based on optimal proportions which are both more sensitive and more specific. The object of this paper is to show that, by means of a simple modification, the ...
