چکیده

Until today maps have proven to be a very efficient presentation form when communicating route information to people. Yet many different types of maps, with different styles and different extent, are used without any evidence about their auxiliary qualities in wayfinding. Traditional city maps contain a lot of detail and could therefore overload the user with information. Possibly the user gets distracted and is hindered in his wayfinding task. Schematic maps, on the other hand, usually lack information that could help a pedestrian to find his way. Presumingly the most helpful information source for pure navigation purposes is a cross of a topographic and a schematic map. This submission describes current efforts at the Technical University of Vienna to prove the effectiveness of certain levels of map abstraction for route communication in pedestrian

SPATIAL ASPECTS OF TASK-SPECIFIC WAYFINDING MAPS A representation-theoretic perspective

Ways of guiding people from a given location to specific other locations are discussed. Different classes of wayfinding tasks are distinguished. Various parameters that influence the suitability of certain wayfinding aids for specific wayfinding tasks are identified. Maps are compared with verbal route descriptions and the respective advantages of the two wayfinding aids are discussed. Spatiall...

How Much Information Do You Need? Schematic Maps in Wayfinding and Self Localisation

The paper is concerned with the empirical investigation of different types of schematised maps. In two experiments a standard floor plan was compared to three strongly schematised maps providing only route knowledge. With the help of one of the maps, the participants had to localise themselves in two tasks and performed two wayfinding tasks in a multi-level building they didn’t know before. We ...

Navigating Indoor with Maps: Representations and Processes

Novice participants were given a schematic map of a multilevel building and performed a series of wayfinding tasks. Consistent with previous research, we found a mix of wayfinding strategies adopted by participants. Further analysis showed that participants incrementally developed and used mental representations of the building by integrating perceptual cues and memories of visited locations wi...

Facilitating Wayfinding Using a Hypermedia Representation of Spatial Cognitive Maps

Navigation in large-scale natural environments is not new and has been dealt with some success across various cultures and species in the animal kingdom. Currently, interest in navigation and wayfinding has been revived by difficulties users usually experience when navigating through large-scale 3D computer virtual environments (CVEs). In this paper, the facilitation of wayfinding in such envir...

Cognitive principles of schematisation for wayfinding assistance

People often need assistance to successfully perform wayfinding tasks in unfamiliar environments. Nowadays, a huge variety of wayfinding assistance systems exist. All these systems intend to present the needed information for a certain wayfinding situation in an adequate presentation. Some wayfinding assistance systems utilise findings for the field of cognitive sciences to develop and design c...
