Epidemiology of the first outbreak of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in Saudi Arabia
نویسندگان
چکیده
Results During March 2010, a cluster of 6 patients with CRKP was detected. Patients with CRKP were placed under strict contact isolation. Admission and periodic active surveillance cultures showed a downward trend of CRKP clinical cases over the following months to zeros in July and August. All patients had prolonged hospital stay before CRKP detection and the majority had recent history of carbapenem use (75%), colonization/infection with other MDROs (75%), surgical procedures (80%), indwelling devices (83%), and mechanical ventilation (75%). About 33% of patients with CRKP had clinical infection and 58% died during the current hospitalization. PFGE results identified a dominant clone during the outbreak, Figure 1.

Draft Genome Sequence of a Multidrug-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Strain Isolated from King Abdullah Medical City, Makkah, Saudi Arabia
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative infections represent a growing problem and a serious global threat. Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is perhaps cause the most difficult infection to treat and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of an MDR K. pneumoniae strain isolated from Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
متن کاملA silent outbreak due to Klebsiella pneumoniae that co-produced NDM-1 and OXA-48 carbapenemases, and infection control measures
Objective(s): Infections due to carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae are associated with high morbidity and mortality. In this study, we report a hospital outbreak due to co-producing OXA-48 and NDM-1 K. pneumoniae clone. The aim of the study is to investigate the clonal relationship of strains, risk factors of outbreak and infection control measures.<em...
متن کاملEvaluation and Identification of Carbapenem Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Hospitalized Patients in Qom City, (Iran)
Background and Objectives: Klebsiella pneumonia is a facultative anaerobe bacterium from enterobacteriaceae family, which causes a wide range of diseases, such as urinary tract infections, cystitis, pneumonia, surgical wounds infections, infectious endocarditis, and diffused infections, especially in patients with HIV infection and immunosuppression. The aim of this study was to identify carbap...
متن کاملCharacterization of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae with High Rate of Autochthonous Transmission in the Arabian Peninsula
To establish the role of local transmission versus possible pathogen import due to previous foreign exposure in infections caused by carbapenem non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae in the Arabian Peninsula, 200 independent isolates collected in 16 hospitals of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates were studied. All strains were multidrug resistant; 42.5% of them also qualified a...
متن کاملWhole-Genome Comparative Analysis of Two Carbapenem-Resistant ST-258 Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains Isolated during a North-Eastern Ohio Outbreak: Differences within the High Heterogeneity Zones
Klebsiella pneumoniae has become one of the most dangerous causative agents of hospital infections due to the acquisition of resistance to carbapenems, one of the last resort families of antibiotics. Resistance is usually mediated by carbapenemases coded for by different classes of genes. A prolonged outbreak of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae infections has been recently described in northe...
