چکیده

When Jupiter's Roche Lobe radius exceeded the scale height of the protoplanetary disk, Jupiter opened a gap in the disk. When the gap was wide enough, tidal torques from the disk interior and exterior to Jupiter were suppressed and migration continued on the accretion time scale. In the 'minimum solar nebula' about two Jupiter masses of gas remained between Jupiter and Saturn and about five Jupiter masses between Jupiter and Uranus. Unless all but a Jupiter mass of the outer disk was removed, Jupiter would have migrated into the Sun on the accretion time scale. So far, no mechanism has been postulated to remove the outer disk except for photo-evaporation which might work exterior to Saturn. For extra-solar Jupiters at an AU or less from the central star, photo-evaporation would not remove the outer disk. We propose a new mechanism, relying on the irradiation of the exposed edge of the gap by the Sun, to cause gas from the outer disk to cross the gap and become part of the inner disk, whence it was later accreted by the Sun.

Planetary migration in a planetesimal disk : why did Neptune stop at 30 AU ?

We study planetary migration in a gas-free disk of planetesimals. In the case of our Solar System we show that Neptune could have had either a damped migration, limited to a few AUs, or a forced migration up to the disk’s edge, depending on the disk’s mass density. We also study the possibility of runaway migration of isolated planets in very massive disk, which might be relevant for extra-sola...

General Analysis of Type I Planetary Migration with Stochastic Perturbations

This paper presents a generalized treatment of Type I planetary migration in the presence of stochastic perturbations. In many planet-forming disks, the Type I migration mechanism, driven by asymmetric torques, acts on a short time scale and compromises planet formation. If the disk also supports MHD instabilities, however, the corresponding turbulent fluctuations produce additional stochastic ...

Diffusive Migration of Low-Mass Proto-planets in Turbulent Disks

Torque fluctuations due to magnetorotational turbulence in proto-planetary disks may greatly influence the migration patterns and survival probabilities of nascent planets. Provided that the turbulence is a stationary stochastic process with finite amplitude and correlation time, the resulting diffusive migration can be described with a FokkerPlanck equation, which we reduce to an advection-dif...

Saving Planetary Systems: Dead Zones & Planetary Migration

The tidal interaction between a disk and a planet leads to the planet’s migration. It is widely believed that this mechanism explains the variety of orbital radii of extrasolar planets. A long-standing question regarding this mechanism is how to stop the migration before planets plunge into their central stars. In this paper, we propose a new, simple mechanism to significantly slow down planet ...

Failed Oort Clouds and Planetary Migration

Planet formation is accompanied by the formation of comet clouds. In systems where planets migrate on rapid timescales, the diffusive evolution of comet orbits may stall, resulting in a comet cloud intermediate between a flattened Kuiper Belt and a spherical Oort cloud. These ‘failed Oort clouds’ may provide a ‘smoking gun’, indicating that planetary migration has taken place. If some fraction ...

Low–Mass Proto–Planet Migration in T-Tauri α–Disks

We present detailed estimates of “type-I” migration rates for low-mass proto-planets embedded in steady-state T-Tauri α–disks, based on Lindblad torque calculations ignoring feedback on the disk. Differences in migration rates for several plausible background disk models are explored and we contrast results obtained using the standard two dimensional formalism of spiral density wave theory with...
