Postembryonic Growth and Morphological Variability in Turbanella mustela (Gastrotricha, Macrodasyida)
نویسنده
چکیده
The macrodasyid gastrotrich Turbanella mustela was studied by light microscopy and analyzed for postembryonic growth and variation. Growth was characterized by a positive relationship between the length of the body and the lengths of the pharynx and intestine, widths of the head and body, and diameter of the buccal capsule. Evidence of early growth in many of these structures is indicated by strong positive correlations between their dimensions and body length in the smallest size class. It is hypothesized that early and rapid growth of the buccal capsule and pharynx may be of particular importance in the trophic ecology of the species. An analysis of the relative proportions of the alimentary structures to one another throughout ontogeny is thought to be of limited taxonomic importance, but may be of significance in understanding the evolution of the phylum. Ontogenetic variation in metric and meristic features does not affect species identification and juveniles appear as miniature forms of the adult. Juveniles have fewer adhesive tubules than adults and ontogeny contributes to a significant increase in the number of lateral, caudal and dorsal adhesive tubules. Early meristic development may represent an adaptation to rigorous beach conditions, and increase anchorage and adhesion in species common to high-energy beaches. Further, ontogenetic variation in the number of adhesive tubules may contribute to intraspecific differences in the distribution of Turbanella mustela and affect the species’ susceptibility to passive dispersal by wave action. Marine Gastrotricha of the Near East: 1. Fourteen new species of Macrodasyida and a redescription of Dactylopodola agadasys Hochberg, 2003
The near eastern geographical region is almost devoid of reports of macrodasyidan gastrotrichs, the exceptions themselves being part of this study. Here, as Part 1 are described fourteen new Macrodasyida from countries of the Near East (Cyprus, Egypt and Israel, representing both the Mediterranean and the Red Seas), and a redescription of the previously described Dactylopodolidae: Dactylopodola...
متن کاملPhylogeny of Gastrotricha: a morphology-based framework of gastrotrich relationships.
Currently, the phylum Gastrotricha is divided into the orders Macrodasyida and Chaetonotida, with the structure of the myoepithelial pharynx being an important distinguishing feature. Macrodasyida currently has six recognized families, and Chaetonotida comprises seven families. However, within-group relationships are poorly understood. To arrive at a better understanding of gastrotrich systemat...
متن کاملPhylogeny of Thaumastodermatidae (Gastrotricha: Macrodasyida) Inferred from Nuclear and Mitochondrial Sequence Data
BACKGROUND Phylogenetic relationships within Gastrotricha are poorly known. Attempts to shed light on this subject using morphological traits have led to hypotheses lacking satisfactory statistical support; it seemed therefore that a different approach was needed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In this paper we attempt to elucidate the relationships within the taxonomically vast family Thauma...
متن کاملGastrotricha: A Marine Sister for a Freshwater Puzzle
BACKGROUND Within an evolutionary framework of Gastrotricha Marinellina flagellata and Redudasys fornerise bear special interest, as they are the only Macrodasyida that inhabit freshwater ecosystems. Notwithstanding, these rare animals are poorly known; found only once (Austria and Brazil), they are currently systematised as incertae sedis. Here we report on the rediscovery of Redudasys forneri...
متن کاملAn Integrated Morphological and Molecular Approach to the Description and Systematisation of a Novel Genus and Species of Macrodasyida (Gastrotricha)
BACKGROUND Gastrotricha systematics is in a state of flux mainly due to the conflicts between cladistic studies base on molecular markers and the classical systematisation based on morphological traits. In sandy samples from Thailand, we found numerous macrodasyidan gastrotrichs belonging to an undescribed species of difficult taxonomic affiliation. The abundance and original nature of the spec...
