چکیده

Muller-Lyer figure was well known as the illusionary figure and it has frequently used with various variations on the studies investigating human visual perception process and mechanisms (e.g., Franz et al., 2001). But few studies attempt to estimate quantitatively how much the difference in size between real and perceptual objects and/or how much the properties of the figure, such as the angle of arrows, affects on such illusionary perception. In this study, the blender-type Muller-Lyer figures were repetitively tested to subjects with changing its figure properties, and the amount of subjective illusionary perception was estimated statistically.

Quantitative Estimation of the Muller-Lyer Illusion

The Müller-Lyer figure and the fly.

In the Müller-Lyer illusion two horizontal line segments of equal length are perceived by humans as unequal. The gaze of a fly presented with Müller-Lyer figures corresponds to human eye movements and human (illusionary) evaluations of the segment lengths. It is suggested that a theory similar to the phenomenological theory which accounts for the fly's gaze may account for the human eye's movem...

Seeing the world dimly: the impact of early visual deficits on visual experience in schizophrenia.

Deficits in early visual processing are well documented in schizophrenia, using methods such as contrast sensitivity. Higher, integrative stages of functioning, such as susceptibility to visual illusions, have been evaluated less extensively. For example, patients show increased susceptibility to (ie, are more easily affected by) the Muller-Lyer illusion but decreased susceptibility (ie, are le...

Perceptual similarity and the neural correlates of geometrical illusions in human brain structure

Geometrical visual illusions are an intriguing phenomenon, in which subjective perception consistently misjudges the objective, physical properties of the visual stimulus. Prominent theoretical proposals have been advanced attempting to find common mechanisms across illusions. But empirically testing the similarity between illusions has been notoriously difficult because illusions have very dif...

Contrasting Three Popular Explanations for the Muller-Lyer Illusion

Problem statement: Using the method of adjustment, participants compared the line lengths of ‘dumbbell’ and ‘spectacle’ versions of Muller-Lyer (circles and ovals at the endpoints in place of arrowheads). Approach: Three popular competing explanations for the illusion (conflicting cues, misapplied size constancy scaling and confusion hypothesis) make differing predictions concerning the pattern...
