Treating Attention to Improve Auditory Comprehension in Aphasia
نویسندگان
چکیده
most effective interaction with partner T and her least effective interaction with partner L appears to be differences in the nonaphasic partners’ interaction style. L tended to produce contentless back-channel ‘‘mhm’s’’ instead of utilizing her turns to produce understanding checks; then, when she did produce a check it contained a large number of content units. T, on the other hand, produced understanding checks on a higher percentage of her turns and each check contained much less information. Thus, the aphasic partner invites initiation of understanding checks by establishing eye contact but the nonaphasic partner must be attentive, receptive, and socially willing to initiate them despite the fact that they slow down the interaction and, worse, openly acknowledge that there may have been difficulty in understanding the aphasic partner.

Fluent Aphasia From Herpes Simplex Encephalitis
The present case report introduces a patient with fluent aphasia, anterograde amnesia and anosmia due to herpes simplex encephalitis after her first delivery. The left medial temporal lobe was one of the main areas involved. On aphasia testing she showed severe anomia on both confrontation and free recall, agraphia, alexia, repetition disorder and some auditory comprehension impairments. Therap...
متن کاملComprehension of Complex Sentences in the Persian-Speaking Patients With Aphasia
Introduction: To study sentence comprehension in Persian-speaking Patients with Aphasia considering the factors of complexity. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the performance of 6 non-fluent aphasic patients were tested and their performance was compared to 15 matched control group. Comprehension of semantically reversible sentences was assessed using a binary sentence-picture matching...
متن کاملContributions of sensory input, auditory search and verbal comprehension to cortical activity during speech processing.
We studied eight normal subjects in an fMRI experiment where they listened to natural speech sentences and to matched simple or complex speech envelope noises. Neither of the noises (simple or complex) were understood initially, but after the corresponding natural speech sentences had been heard, comprehension was close to perfect for the complex but still absent for the simple speech envelope ...
متن کاملRevealing and quantifying the impaired phonological analysis underpinning impaired comprehension in Wernicke's aphasia.
Wernicke's aphasia is a condition which results in severely disrupted language comprehension following a lesion to the left temporo-parietal region. A phonological analysis deficit has traditionally been held to be at the root of the comprehension impairment in Wernicke's aphasia, a view consistent with current functional neuroimaging which finds areas in the superior temporal cortex responsive...
متن کاملOutcome Improvements in Persons with Chronic Global Aphasia following the Use of a Speech-generating Device
Advanced computer-based interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in aphasia rehabilitation even in the chronic stage, and outcome studies using standardised assessment instruments reveal previously unstudied patterns of improvement and associated improvement magnitudes. Here we analyze persons with chronic global aphasia. Twenty subjects were assessed at intake and at discharge, at the imp...
