Haptic interaction in VR-based paracentesis simulation for dexterity enhancement and assessment
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we describe the development of an interactive virtual reality (VR) system that aims to realistically simulate specific paracentesis clinical procedures (particularly the procedure involved in the catheterization of the subclavian vein). A simplified elasto-static finite element model is used for the physically based simulation of the deformable tissues, particularly skin deflection during needle insertion. The VR-based simulation is being coupled with a haptic feedback device to provide to the user realistic feeling of the interaction forces applied during the simulated paracentesis procedure. The system described is developed in the frames of a research project aiming to develop a larger-scale virtual environment simulator of emergency room scenarios and protocols for clinical skill training and assessment.

Paracentesis modeling and VR-based interactive simulation with haptic display for clinical skill training and assessment
In this paper we describe the development of an interactive virtual reality (VR) system that aims to realistically simulate specific paracentesis clinical procedures (particularly the procedure involved in the catheterization of the subclavian vein). Two elastostatic finite element (FE) models are developed to enable physically based simulation of the deformable tissues, particularly skin defle...
متن کاملPilot Evaluation Study of a Virtual Paracentesis Simulator for Skill Training and Assessment: The Beneficial Effect of Haptic Display
Effective, real time training of health-care professionals in invasive procedures is a challenging task. Furthermore, assessing in practice the acquisition of the dexterity and skills required to safely perform such operations is particularly difficult to perform objectively and reliably. The development of virtual reality (VR) simulators offers great potential towards these objectives, and can...
متن کاملHaptic display improves training and skill assessment performance in a virtual paracentesis simulator: A pilot evaluation study
We have developed a prototype virtual reality simulator platform for training in a class of paracentesis operations. A pilot study was conducted to obtain an initial proof-of-concept on the effectiveness of such a platform, and evaluate its performance as tool: (a) to enhance clinical training and (b) to provide objective assessment of surgical dexterity and skills. The case study that is prese...
متن کاملCybHaptics: A Class for Haptics Support in Virtual Reality Systems
Haptics have been largely used in VR environments, especially in training systems in which user dexterity is a mandatory requirement to determine performance. Besides that, through tactile object exploration, applications can offer a high level of interaction to users. This work presents CybHaptics, a set of classes for the CyberMed, a system for fast development of medical simulators. The goal...
متن کاملRelationship Between Laterality and Handedness With the Higher Order Sensory Functions and Manual Dexterity of the Elderly
Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the possible effects of laterality and handedness on higher-order sensory functions and manual dexterity of the elderly. Methods: In this non-experimental cross-sectional study, 58 elderly people aged 60-75 years (35 right-handed) were recruited through a convenience sampling method. Laterality of the selected subjects was examined using the E...
