Embedded trapped modes in water waves and acoustics
نویسنده
چکیده
Trapped modes, localized oscillations in unbounded media, are referred to in different contexts by various names; acoustic resonances, Rayleigh-Bloch waves, edge waves, array guided surface waves and bound states being examples. Most studies have concentrated on such phenomena in situations where they are associated with a cut-off frequency below which wave propagation is not possible. It is much more difficult to establish the existence of trapped modes in regions of parameter space which permit energy to travel to infinity. In this article we review recent results on these so-called embedded modes and discuss problems for future research. There are two distinct cases to consider. First, we consider trapped modes in waveguides governed by the Helmholtz equation. Such problems arise when considering obstacles in acoustic waveguides or bound states in quantum wires, for example. In two dimensions, the same equations govern water-wave channels after the depth dependence has been removed. Secondly, we examine situations from water-wave theory in which the potential satisfies Laplace’s equation with the frequency parameter now appearing in the free-surface boundary condition.

1 Scattering matrices and existence of trapped waves Systems with finitely many scattering channels are discussed in various branches of wave physics. One can mention, for instance, diffraction gratings (optics), waveguides with local perturbations (acoustics, microwave and quantum physics), etc. (few examples are shown in Fig.1). In all cases, far away from the scattering area both incident an...
متن کاملBEM-FDM modeling of water free surface interaction with trapped air in OWC chamber for calculating generated power
Free surface modeling plays an important role in some ocean structures design, especially in Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. Boundary element method (BEM) is a suitable method for free surface modeling due to its simplicity, quick solving, and low data storage requirement. In this paper, BEM was used for free surface modeling in OWC chamber and out of it. Linear kinematic and dynamic bo...
متن کاملOn the non-existence of surface waves trapped by submerged obstructions having exterior cusp points
Trapped modes, i.e. localized unforced oscillations of fluid in presence of floating structures and bottom topography, have been a topic of considerable interest over many years and substantial effort has been put, for a variety of different geometries, into finding the solutions and conditions of their existence or non-existence. However, the class of geometries having cusp points has been avo...
متن کاملTrapped Modes around Freely Floating Bodies in Two-layer Fluids
We consider the coupled system modeling the interaction of time-harmonic progressive water-waves with an array of three-dimensional freely floating obstacles in a two-layer fluid. Presenting a variational and operator formulation for the problem and a condition guaranteeing the existence of trapped waves, we give a number of examples of floating structures supporting trapped waves. We also stud...
متن کاملParaxial Coupling of Propagating Modes in Three-Dimensional Waveguides with Random Boundaries
We analyze long range wave propagation in three-dimensional random waveguides. The waves are trapped by top and bottom boundaries, but the medium is unbounded in the two remaining directions. We consider scalar waves, and motivated by applications in underwater acoustics, we take a pressure release boundary condition at the top surface and a rigid bottom boundary. The wave speed in the waveguid...
