The Emergence of Algebraic Curves and Surfaces in Geometric Design
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper highlights algebraic curves and surfaces and illustrates its use in geometric design applications. It contrasts the implicit and parametric representations for algorithms in Geometric Modelling, Scattered Data fitting and Computer Graphics/Mesh Generation. In this framework the choice of which of the two representations to use is determined entirely by the desired optimality of the geometric algorithm. ·Supported in part by NSF grant CCR 90-02228, NSF grant DMS 91-01424 and AFOSR contract 91-0276

Computer algebra and geometry – some interactions
Algebraic curves and surfaces have been studied intensively in algebraic geometry for centuries. Thus, there exists a huge amount of theoretical knowledge about these geometric objects. Recently, algebraic curves and surfaces play an important and ever increasing rôle in computer aided geometric design, computer vision, computer aided manufacturing, coding theory, and cryptography, just to name...
متن کاملAlgebraic pruning: a fast technique for curve and surface intersection
Computing the intersection of parametric and algebraic curves and surfaces is a fun damental problem in computer graphics and geometric modeling This problem has been extensively studied in the literature and di erent techniques based on subdivision interval analysis and algebraic formulation are known For low degree curves and surfaces algebraic methods are considered to be the fastest whereas...
متن کاملOn Projections in Geometric Design
We discuss using projected manifolds in geometric design and processing. Curves and surfaces are defined in n-space as algebraic sets of the appropriate dimensionality, and their projection into a three-dimensional subspace is considered. In this approach, the additional variables serve to express simply geometric constraints, and so complex surfaces such as offsets, equi-distance surfaces, rou...
متن کاملAutomatic parameterization of rational curves and surfaces III: Algebraic plane curves
We consider algorithms to compute the genus and rational parametric equations, for implicitly defined irreducible rational plane algebraic curves of arbitrary degree. Rational panuneterizations exist for all irreducible algebraic curves of genus O. The genus is compuled by a complete analysis of the singularities of plane algebraic curves, using affine quadratic transformations. The rational pa...

Algebraic curves and surfaces play an important and ever increasing role in computer aided geometric design, computer vision, and computer aided manufacturing. Consequently, theoretical results need to be adapted to practical needs. We need efficient algorithms for generating, representing, manipulating, analyzing, rendering algebraic curves and surfaces. In the last years there has been dramat...
