چکیده

Despite many previous studies on the association between hyperthyroidism and the hyperadrenergic state, controversies still exist. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is a well recognizedmethod in the nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), and it has physiological significance related to the autonomic nervous system. In particular, an increased short-termscaling exponentα1 calculated fromDFA is associatedwith both increased sympathetic activity and decreased vagal activity. No study has investigated the DFA of HRV in hyperthyroidism. This study was designed to assess the sympathovagal balance in hyperthyroidism. We performed the DFA along with the linear analysis of HRV in 36 hyperthyroid Graves’ disease patients (32 females and 4 males; age 30± 1 years, means± SE) and 36 normal controls matched by sex, age and body mass index. Compared with the normal controls, the hyperthyroid patients revealed a significant increase (P < 0.001) in α1 (hyperthyroid 1.28±0.04 versus control 0.91±0.02), long-term scaling exponent α2 (1.05± 0.02 versus 0.90±0.01), overall scaling exponent α (1.11±0.02 versus 0.89±0.01), low frequency power in normalized units (LF%) and the ratio of low frequency power to high frequency power (LF/HF); and a significant decrease (P < 0.001) in the standard deviation of the R–R intervals (SDNN) and high frequency power (HF). In conclusion, hyperthyroidism is characterized by concurrent sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal. This sympathovagal imbalance state in hyperthyroidism helps to explain the higher prevalence of atrial fibrillation and exercise intolerance among hyperthyroid patients. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Effects of vagal blockade on the complexity of heart rate variability in rats

In this paper we investigate the influence of vagal blockage on heart rate variability complexity measures. Nine conscious rats are injected with methyl-scopolamine brobide (50 μg/kg s.c.). We analyze 10 minute segments of beat-to-beat intervals before and after injection by standard time and frequency domain methods, compression entropy, sample entropy, Poincaré plot, detrended fluctuation ana...

Sympathovagal imbalance in thyroid dysfunctions in females: correlation with thyroid profile, heart rate and blood pressure.

The aim of the study was to investigate the role of spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) for assessing the type and degree of sympathovagal imbalance (SVI) and their link to cardiovascular morbidities in thyroid dysfunctions. Forty-five female subjects (15 control subjects and freshly diagnosed untreated 15 hypothyroid and 15 hyperthyroid patients) were recruited for the study. Thy...

Effects of the cold pressor test on cardiac autonomic control in normal subjects.

The cold pressor test (CPT) triggers in healthy subjects a vascular sympathetic activation and an increase in blood pressure. The heart rate (HR) response to this test is less well defined, with a high inter-individual variability. We used traditional spectral analysis together with the non-linear detrended fluctuation analysis to study the autonomic control of HR during a 3-min CPT. 39 healthy...

Increased total heart rate variability and enhanced cardiac vagal autonomic activity in healthy humans with sinus bradycardia.

Sinus bradycardia can be defined as a sinus rhythm with a resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute or less. While it is assumed that increased autonomic parasympathetic activity is associated with sinus bradycardia, such an association has yet to be proven. The aims of this study were to compute a number of heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in healthy individuals with sinus bradycardia a...

Sympathovagal imbalance in hyperthyroidism.

We assessed sympathovagal balance in thyrotoxicosis. Fourteen patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism were studied before and after 7 days of treatment with propranolol (40 mg 3 times a day) and in the euthyroid state. Data were compared with those obtained in a group of age-, sex-, and weight-matched controls. Autonomic inputs to the heart were assessed by power spectral analysis of heart rate v...
