Van Gogh’s brushstrokes: marks of authenticity?

چکیده
The process of attributing paintings relies partly upon recognition of an artist’s hand. Around the middle of the last century, Maurits M. van Dantzig (1903–1960) attempted to define the ‘characteristic touch’ of the painter, Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890). His broader aim was to develop a flexible yet precise method to measure the features of both spontaneity and inhibition, evident in the style of brushwork for example. The underlying idea that these qualities can be used to separate a genuine work from a second-rate copy or forgery still plays a key role in attribution studies today. A recent initiative explores the potential of advanced computer image analysis techniques to help identify and quantify these properties at the scale of brushwork. This paper describes the basic principles of the method used, involving statistical analysis of different size wavelets present in digital images of paintings by Van Gogh or other artists.

Computer-assisted analysis of painting brushstrokes: digital image processing for unsupervised extraction of visible features from van Gogh's works
The automatic extraction of objective features from paintings, like brushstroke distribution, orientation, and shape, could be particularly useful for different artwork analyses and management tasks. In fact, these features contribute to provide a unique signature of the artists’ style and can be effectively used for artist identification and classification, artwork examination and retrieval, e...
متن کاملFlying Fox, Vincent van Gogh, 1885
According to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the origins of Flying Fox are not well documented. Van Gogh probably saw a flying fox in a museum or private collection in Brabant, Antwerp, or Paris. The dark brown background colors in the painting are similar to those in other works of his Nuenen period. The brighter colors and rough brushstrokes in the wings are more avant garde and suggest tec...
متن کاملDirect Digital Imaging of Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait – A Personal View
The ability to accurately record the color of a painting within an American museum is explored. Limitations in imaging techniques and hardware are current barriers to high quality. Interestingly, simple colormanagement techniques provide large improvement. Perhaps the greatest advantage is a decrease in visual adjustment. A review is presented of the author’s experiences in trying to digitally ...
متن کاملA comparative study of Vincent van Gogh’s Bedroom series
Recent plans to clean and restore Vincent van Gogh’s painting of his Bedroom in Arles (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam) sparked off a broad collaborative campaign of investigations to compare the materials and techniques used in all three painted versions of this theme, including the Bedroom pictures now in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The features cons...

On December 24, 1888, a patient was admitted to the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Arles, France, brought in by the police because of reports that he had cut off his ear and given it to a woman. The patient was the Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. The doctor on call was Dr. Felix Rey, a young “interne en medicine,” age 21 (Figure 1). Van Gogh had mutilated the lower part of his ear. Dr. Rey had earlier...
