Case studies of the propagation characteristics of auroral TIDS with EISCAT CP2 data using maximum entropy cross-spectral analysis

چکیده
In this paper case studies of propagation characteristics of two TIDs are presented which are induced by atmospheric gravity waves in the auroral F-region on a magnetic quiet day. By means of maximum entropy cross-spectral analysis of EISCAT CP2 data, apparent full wave-number vectors of the TIDs are obtained as a function of height. The analysis results show that the two events considered can be classi®ed as moderately large-scale TID and mediumscale TID, respectively. One exhibits a dominant period of about 72 min, a mean horizontal phase speed of about 180m/s (corresponding to a horizontal wavelength of about 780 km) directed south-eastwards and a vertical phase speed of 55m/s for a height of about 300 km. The other example shows a dominant period of 44min, a mean horizontal phase velocity of about 160m/s (corresponding to a horizontal wavelength of about 420 km directed southwestwards, and a vertical phase velocity of about 50m/s at 250 km altitude.

A study of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances and Atmospheric Gravity Waves using EISCAT Svalbard Radar IPY-data
We present a statistical study of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) as observed by the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) during the continuous IPY-run (March 2007–February 2008) with field-aligned measurements. We have developed a semi-automatic routine for searching and extracting Atmospheric Gravity Wave (AGW) activity. The collected data shows that AGW-TID signatures are common in the high...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Characteristics, Physical Concepts and Entropy Generation in a Turbulent Channel Flow Using Vortex Blob Method
In this paper, using vortex blob method (VBM), turbulent flow in a channel is studied and physical concepts of turbulence are obtained and discussed. At first, time-averaged velocities, and , and then their fluctuations are calculated. To clarify turbulence structures, velocity fluctuations and are plotted. It is observed that turbulence structures occupy different positions and move with con...
متن کاملStudy of auroral forms and electron precipitation with the IRIS, DASI and EISCAT systems
Simultaneous observations with the IRIS, DASI and EISCAT systems are employed in the study of the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of auroral forms and precipitation regions during substorm activity. The evolution of the spectrum of precipitating electrons above Tromsø during the various phases of substorms is discussed. The flux-energy spectrum in the 1–320 keV range is derived from...
متن کاملSome aspects of large-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances which originate at conjugate locations in auroral zones, cross the equator and sometimes encircle the earth
The occurrence of large-scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (LS-TIDs) has been examined. Initially some literature on their generation is considered. Travel during daylight hours and also paths which involve propagation paths towards the poles are illustrated by a few examples from the literature. A daytime ionogram recording of an LSTID is presented and discussed as are nighttime ionogra...
متن کاملCombined optical, EISCAT and magnetic observations of the omega bands/Ps6 pulsations and an auroral torch in the late morning hours: a case study
We present here the results of multi-instrument observations of auroral torch and Ps6 magnetic pulsations, which are assumed to be the magnetic signature of the spatially periodic optical auroras known as omega bands. Data from TV and ASC cameras in Barentsburg and Ny Ålesund, EISCAT radars in Longyearbyen and Tromsø, as well as IMAGE network were used in this study. The auroral phenomenon whic...
