Normal absorption in Thai subjects with non-specific jejunal abnormalities.

چکیده
There is a growing belief that subclinical tropical sprue is widespread in tropical countries (Klipstein, 1967). This opinion is based on studies of asymptomatic adults in India (Baker et al., 1962), Pakistan (Russell et al., 1966 ; Lindenbaum et al., 1966b), and Thailand (Sprinz et al., 1962), in whom jejunal histological abnormalities and impaired xylose absorption were frequently found. Recent studies in Haiti by Klipstein et al. (1966) show that this condition is very common in individuals complaining of one or more symptoms of the disease. The ease with which the same histological and biochemical abnormalities could be demonstrated in asymptomatic subjects led these workers to speculate that tropical sprue is a disease with a wide range of expression and that the overt cases represent only a fraction of the total number affected. Because a jejunal lesion has been found commonly in asymptomatic subjects in Thailand (Sprinz et al., 1962), we undertook to study its functional expression with a wider variety of tests than previously employed in order to assess the lesion

Cellobiose/mannitol sugar test--a sensitive tubeless test for coeliac disease: results on 1010 unselected patients.
The cellobiose/mannitol (Ce/Ma) test is a non-invasive technique for investigating intestinal permeability. In coeliac disease there is a decreased absorption of small molecules and paradoxically increased absorption of large molecules. The simultaneous administration of cellobiose and mannitol as two probe molecules allows the permeability of the small bowel mucosa to be studied, eliminating e...
متن کاملNosocomial Jejunal Mucormycosis - an Unusual Cause of Perforation Peritonitis
Mucormycosis is a rare but highly invasive opportunistic fungal infection. Gastrointestinal disease although uncommon is highly fatal. We report a case of jejunal mucormycosis in a 24 year old undernourished female with preceding surgical intervention for acute intestinal obstruction of tubercular etiology. On 8th post-operative day, she developed oozing from suture line, prompting e...
متن کاملAltered jejunal surface pH in coeliac disease: its effect on propranolol and folic acid absorption.
1. Propranolol and folic acid absorption were studied separately in healthy subjects, non-coeliac patients and patients with treated and untreated coeliac disease. 2. The surface pH of jejunal biopsy samples was measured with a pH electrode. 3. When compared with values found in healthy subjects, plasma propranolol levels were elevated in coeliac disease and, in contrast, serum folic acid level...
متن کاملThyrocalcitonin and the jejunal absorption of calcium, water, and electrolytes in normal subjects.
Jejunal absorption of calcium, water, and electrolytes was measured in 10 normal subjects by the triple-lumen perfusion method. During the control period, water and electrolyte movements were minimal when a bicarbonate-free test solution was infused. By contrast, bicarbonate-containing solutions were readily absorbed in the control period. Intravenous infusion of synthetic salmon calcitonin (SC...
متن کاملWater and solute movement in the small intestine of patients with sprue.
Water and electrolyte movement in the jejunum of normal subjects and patients with sprue was measured during perfusion with isotonic electrolyte solutions. Normal subjects absorbed water, sodium, and potassium. By contrast, in patients with sprue (seven with adult celiac sprue and one with tropical sprue) who had diarrhea and steatorrhea, these substances were secreted into the intestinal lumen...
