A NONPARAMETRIC TEST OF EXOGENEITY Richard Blundell

چکیده
This paper is concerned with inference about a function g that is identified by a conditional moment restriction involving instrumental variables. The function is nonparametric. It satisfies mild regularity conditions but is otherwise unknown. The paper presents test of the hypothesis that g is the mean of a random variable Y conditional on a covariate X . The need to test this hypothesis arises frequently in economics. The test does not require nonparametric instrumental-variables (IV) estimation of g and is not subject to the ill-posed inverse problem that nonparametric IV estimation entails. The test is consistent whenever g differs from the conditional mean function of Y on a set of non-zero probability. Moreover, the power of the test is arbitrarily close to 1 uniformly over a set of functions g whose distance from the conditional mean function is O n , where is the sample size. 1/ 2 ( − ) n

A Nonparametric Test of Exogeneity
This paper presents a test for exogeneity of explanatory variables that minimizes the need for auxiliary assumptions that are not required by the definition of exogeneity. It concerns inference about a non-parametric function g that is identified by a conditional moment restriction involving instrumental variables (IV). A test of the hypothesis that g is the mean of a random variable Y conditio...
متن کاملA Consistent Nonparametric Bootstrap Test of Exogeneity
We propose a way of testing exogeneity of an explanatory variable without any parametric assumptions in the presence of a conditional "instrumental variable". A testable implication is derived that if an explanatory variable is exogenous, the conditional distribution of the outcome given explanatory variables is independent of the instrumental variable. We propose a consistent nonparametric boo...
متن کاملA Directional Test for Average Partial Effects in Linear Regression
For the OLS estimators in a classical linear model to have average partial effects interpretation, one usually imposes the so-called “strict exogeneity”condition. In practice, testing strict exogeneity condition can be done by omnibus nonparametric test. However, there are cases where strict exogeneity condition fails but the average partial effects interpretation of OLS estimator still survive...
متن کاملSemi-nonparametric Iv Estimation of Shape-invariant Engel Curves By
1 This paper studies a shape-invariant Engel curve system with endogenous total expenditure , in which the shape-invariant specification involves a common shift parameter for each demographic group in a pooled system of nonparametric Engel curves. We focus on the identification and estimation of both the nonparametric shapes of the En-gel curves and the parametric specification of the demograph...
متن کاملHeterogeneity and the nonparametric analysis of consumer choice: conditions for invertibility
This paper considers structural nonparametric random utility models for continuous choice variables. It provides sufficient conditions on random preferences to yield reducedform systems of nonparametric stochastic demand functions that allow global invertibility between demands and random utility components. Invertibility is essential for global identification of structural consumer demand mode...
