چکیده

We present new Kand L-band imaging of a representative sample of members of the young 3−5Myr old σOrionis cluster. We identified objects with (K − L) excess by analysing colour-colour diagrams and comparing the observations with empirical mainsequence colours. The derived disk frequency depends on the method used: (54±15)% if measured directly from the JHKL colour-colour diagram; or (46±14)% if excesses are computed with respect to predicted photospheric colours (according to the objects spectral types, 2-σ excess detections). We compare the (K −L) excess with other indicators and show that this is a robust and reliable disk indicator. We also compare the derived disk frequency with similarly aged clusters and discuss possible implications for disk lifetimes. The computed age of the σOri cluster is very important: a cluster age of 3Myr would support the overall disk lifetime of 6Myr proposed in the literature, while an age > 4Myr would point to a slower disk destruction rate.

Young Stars and Their Circumstellar Disks in the Σ Orionis Cluster

The σOrionis cluster is a young association evolving under the disruptive influence of its massive O-star namesake. We are analysing this cluster as part of a program to characterise the influence of O-stars on the early stages of stellar evolution. At an age of approximately 4Myr, this cluster is at a crucial stage in terms of disk evolution and therefore it is a key case to better constrain d...

Circumstellar discs in the young σ Orionis cluster

We present new K-and L ′-band imaging observations for members of the young (3−5 Myr) σ Orionis cluster, obtained with UIST at UKIRT. We determine (K − L ′) colour excesses with respect to the photospheres, finding evidence for warm cir-cumstellar dust around 27 out of 83 cluster members that have masses between 0.04 M ⊙ and 1.0 M ⊙. This indicates a circumstellar disc frequency of at least (33...

Activity at the Deuterium-burning Mass Limit in Orion

We report very intense and variable Hα emission (pseudo-equivalent widths of∼ 180, 410 Å) of S Ori 55, a probable free-floating, M9-type substellar member of the young σ Orionis open star cluster. After comparison with state-of-the-art evolutionary models, we infer that S Ori 55 is near or below the cluster deuterium-burning mass borderline, which separates brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objec...

A near-infrared/optical/X-ray survey in the centre of σ Orionis

Because of the intense brightness of the OB-type multiple star system σ Ori, the low-mass stellar and substellar populations close to the centre of the very young σ Orionis cluster is poorly know. I present an IJHKs survey in the cluster centre, able to detect from the massive early-type stars down to cluster members below the deuterium burning mass limit. The near-infrared and optical data hav...

Properties of Circum(sub)stellar Accretion Disks

We have completed a systematic survey for disks around young brown dwarfs and very low mass stars. By choosing a well-defined sample and by obtaining sensitive thermal IR observations, we can make an unbiased measurement of the disk fraction around such low mass objects. We find that ≈75% of our sample show intrinsic IR excesses, indicative of circum(sub)stellar disks. We discuss the physical p...
