Isolated sphenoid aspergilloma: a differential diagnosis for solitary abducens nerve palsy.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Isolated sphenoid sinusitis (SS) is a very rare and potentially life-threatening occurrence. Because of its rarity, its true incidence is difficult to establish, but it lies within the range of 2.7% to 8% based on larger series (1–3). The incidence of isolated fungal disease is even lower. Diagnostically, SS represents a challenge as it does not present in a similar way to inflammation of the other paranasal sinuses, presenting symptoms being generally non-specific (4).

Unilateral abducens nerve palsy: a presenting sign of sphenoid sinus mucocoeles.
Sphenoid sinus mucocoeles can stimulate a variety of pathological conditions and patients can present to a range of specialists. Because of the relative rarity of sphenoid sinus mucocoeles, diagnosis is often delayed and these lesions can progressively expand and cause direct mechanical compression on adjacent structures. We present three cases which presented with an abducens nerve palsy. Earl...
متن کاملEndoscopic sinus surgery for solitary abducens palsy in patients with isolated sphenoid sinus disease: report of four cases.
Solitary abducens palsy secondary to isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) is rare and early management is important. There is no report regarding the results of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for prolonged abducens palsy due to ISSD. We present four cases of ISSD with solitary abducens palsy that received ESS from 1995 through 2000. The interval between onset of diplopia and ESS was longer th...
متن کاملUnilateral isolated sphenoid sinusitis with contralateral abducens nerve palsy - A rare complication treated in a low-resource setting
BACKGROUND Unilateral isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) is a rare diagnosis of the paranasal sinuses that can be associated with complications involving vascular, neurologic, and optic structures in close proximity. CASE PRESENTATION A 62 year old female presented to a hospital in Georgetown, Guyana with right lateral rectus palsy, diplopia, and a severe progressively worsening headache....
متن کاملSolitary fibrous tumor of the hypoglossal nerve.
SUMMARY We report a case of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) causing isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy. The neuroimaging appearance of the tumor was indistinguishable from that of schwannoma or meningioma. Immunohistochemical tests demonstrated strong reactivity for CD34 but an absence of staining for S100 and epithelial membrane antigen; this profile is indicative of an SFT. SFTs are mesenchymal tu...
متن کاملUnilateral abducens nerve palsy secondary to isolated fungal sphenoidal sinusitis
Background: Fungal sinusitis of isolated sphenoid sinus is a rare entity. Most of the sufferers referred with complications since the primary manifestations are non-characteristic. Case presentation: We describe a 40-year old woman presenting with severe headache, diplopia, and limited right-eye movement. Further studies proposed isolated sphenoidal sinusitis, for which she underwent endoscopic...
