چکیده

Studies with ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABCA1)–deficient mice have been critical in demonstrating the relation between ABCA1 expression, cellular lipid efflux, and HDL metabolism. The phenotype of the ABCA1deficient mouse parallels the phenotype observed in human Tangier disease, including substantial reductions in both apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein AI with confounding affects on atherosclerosis. High density lipoproteins and atherosclerosis: emerging aspects

High density lipoproteins (HDL) promote the efflux of excess cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver for excretion. This ability is responsible for the most relevant anti-atherogenic effect of HDL. The ability of HDL to promote cholesterol efflux results also in the modulation of a series of responses in the immune cells involved in atherosclerosis, including monocyte-macrophages, B an...

Macrophage functions in atherosclerosis.

A therosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial wall instigated by the excessive accumulation of lipoproteins; monocyte recruitment and their differentiation into macrophages in the subendothelial space. Repeated failure of innate immune responses to clear subintimal low-density lipoprotein (LDL), results in the deposition of lipid-laden macrophages or foam cells. Foam cells ...

Pro- or anti-inflammatory role of apolipoprotein A-1 in high-density lipoproteins?

Apolipoprotein A-1 (apoA-1) is the principal protein fraction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), conferring to the latter many of its pleiotropic atheroprotective functions. After its effect on cholesterol efflux, the second most studied feature of apoA-1 is its anti-inflammatory property. In addition, it interferes with lipid peroxidation and innate immune receptors. These anti-inflammatory ef...
