Distributed Algorithms for Fair Bandwidth Allocation to Elastic Services in Broadband Networks

چکیده
The Nash arbitration scheme from cooperative game theory provides a natural framework to address the allocation of available bandwidth in network links which is network (Pareto) optimal and satisfies precise notions of fairness. In this paper we propose two distributed bandwidth allocation schemes that allocate available badwidths to elastic sources according to the Nash arbitration scheme. We prove convergence to the desired allocations for both algorithms. Finally we show how such a scheme can be implemented in a real network.

On multi - criteria approaches to bandwidth allocation
Modern telecommunication networks face an increasing demand for services. Among these, an increasing number are services that can adapt to available bandwidth, and are therefore referred to as elastic traffic. Nominal network design for elastic traffic becomes increasingly significant. Typical resource allocation methods are concerned with the allocation of limited resources among competing act...
متن کاملMax-Min Fair Rate Control of ABR Connections with Nonzero MCRs
Traac sources that do not have intrinsic temporal characteristics are expected to be transported over ATM networks using the Available Bit Rate (ABR) service. These sources are amenable to reactive ow control and are expected to use bandwidth left over after servicing the guaranteed QoS services (CBR and VBR). Fair allocation of the available bandwidth to competing ABR connections is based on t...
متن کاملFair Scheduling and Throughput Maximization for IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode Broadband Wireless Access Networks
Broadband wireless access networks are promising technology for providing better end user services. For such networks, designing a scheduling algorithm that fairly allocates the available bandwidth to the end users and maximizes the overall network throughput is a challenging task. In this paper, we develop a centralized fair scheduling algorithm for IEEE 802.16 mesh networks that exploits the ...
متن کاملA Differentiated Pricing Framework for Improving the Performance of the Elastic Traffics in Data Networks
Rate allocation has become a demanding task in data networks as diversity in users and traffics proliferate. Most commonly used algorithm in end hosts is TCP. This is a loss based scheme therefore it exhibits oscillatory behavior which reduces network performance. Moreover, since the price for all sessions is based on the aggregate throughput, losses that are caused by TCP affect other sessions...
متن کاملA game-theoretic model for capacity-constrained fair bandwidth allocation
Data stream providers face a hard decision to satisfy the requirements of their subscribers. Each user has a minimum and a maximum required bandwidth. The server should be able to decide which requests can be satisfi ed and how much bandwidth will be allocated to each. We present a theoretical framework in a distributed mechanism for fair bandwidth allocation on a network with various bottlenec...
