Delivery systems for long-term oxygen therapy.

چکیده

Table 5 summarizes my current perspective on home oxygen delivery systems in the United States. As I already indicated, scoring for cost and labor may be very different in other countries. As noted, all things considered, today the most reasonable system for home oxygen therapy is the concentrator. Problems with FIO2, liter flow, and portability are clearly overshadowed by cost, labor, ease of use, and lack of potential hazard, as well as potential for future innovation. I would expect with future development that the concentrator will score higher on FIO2, liter flow, and portability. As a result of the anticipated large number of patients worldwide expected to require home oxygen therapy, ongoing improvement in this technology will be evident in the next few years.

Options for home oxygen therapy equipment: storage and metering of oxygen in the home.

Home oxygen therapy equipment options have increased over the past several decades, in response to innovations in technology, economic pressure from third-party payers, and patient demands. The delivery of oxygen in the home has evolved from packaged gas systems containing 99% United States Pharmacopeia oxygen provided by continuous-flow delivery to intermittent-flow delivery, with oxygen conce...

Tubing length for long-term oxygen therapy.

BACKGROUND Most patients on long-term oxygen therapy use stationary oxygen delivery systems. It is not uncommon for guidelines to instruct patients to use tubing lengths no longer than 19.68 ft (6 m) when using an oxygen concentrator and 49.21 ft (15 m) when using cylinders. However, these concepts are not based on sufficient evidence. Thus, our objective was to evaluate whether a 98.42-ft (30-...

Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) revisited: in defense of non-delivery LTOT technology.

The term ‘‘non-delivery LTOT’’ is used to describe installations of newer home oxygen therapy systems where oxygen concentrator technology is used to provide both stationary and ambulatory oxygen.1 The use of non-delivery LTOT equipment obviates the need for oxygen supply companies to make repeat (and costly) home deliveries to replenish depleted gaseous or liquid oxygen contents, the majority ...

Increased exercise capacity in hypoxemic patients after long-term oxygen therapy.

Low-flow continuous oxygen can lead to significant improvement in exercise capacity in selected patients with stable hypoxemic pulmonary disease. Although the mechanisms of improvement are incompletely understood, two tenable hypotheses are (1) the relief of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and (2) improved peripheral oxygen delivery. This prospective study was performed to examine these two ...

Long term continuous domiciliary oxygen therapy by transtracheal catheter.

Long term continuous oxygen therapy improves prognosis in patients with hypoxaemic chronic airflow limitation. Transtracheal delivery of oxygen permits adequate oxygenation of such patients at lower flow rates than are required for delivery by nasal cannulas, thus increasing the time for which portable oxygen cylinders can be used and improving the efficacy of domiciliary oxygen concentrators i...
