چکیده

All-optical WDM networks are fast becoming the choice for future wide-area backbone networks. In this paper, we investigate the online RWA (Routing and Wavelength Assignment) problem for incremental connection requests in all-optical Wavelength-Division-Multiplexed networks, with the objective of maximizing the profit that can be made. Specifically, each connection request between a pair of nodes in the network is associated with an earning, which can be obtained by satisfying the requested connection. To establish a connection, a path through the network is found and the same wavelength which is free on all the links on that path, is assigned . Each wavelength on a link is associated with a cost of using that wavelength on that link. We assume that the connection requests come in one by one(incrementally) and once a connection request is satisfied, the connection stays for a long period of time. We propose heuristics which try to satisfy the incremental connection requests, as they arrive, possibly by re-routing the existing connections in the network, in a 1 manner which maximizes the overall profit (earnings costs) made from the network. The heuristics are then compared with a profit maximizing heuristic, which does not re-route any existing connections.

A Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks

Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of  regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...

Profitable connection assignment in all optical WDM Networks

In this paper, we investigate the problem of assigning connections in all-optical WDM networks so as to maximize the profits. This is important from a carrier’s point of view. We then show that the maximizing profits problem in many cases is different from the traditional minimizing cost or maximizing throughput problem. We formulate the problem as a modified routing and wavelength assignment p...

Solving the RWA Problem in WDM Optical Networks Using the BCO Meta-Heuristic

This paper researches the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in wavelength routed optical WDM networks with the wavelength conversion capability at different network nodes. We studied the static case in which all connection requests are known in advance, thus a routing decision can be made based on the complete knowledge of the traffic to be served by the network. The Bee Colony Op...

Priority Based Wavelength Routed WDM Networks: A Queueing Theory Approach

: The present paper proposes a new model for priority assignment to the incoming call connection request for all optical WDM communication, adopting standard queuing theory concept. The model has been proposed for three different levels of call connection priorities, categorizing them into three types of signals as type0, type1 and type2 according to increasing priority, and generation probabil...

Effect of Wavelength Conversion in Survivable Wavelength Routed Optical WDM Networks with Alternate Routing

This study focuses on the routing and wavelength assignment in wavelength-routed optical wavelength-divisioned -multiplexed networks with circuit switching using wavelength conversion. Wavelength conversion has been proposed for use in such networks to improve the efficiency. The crucial factors which determine the efficiency of using wavelength conversion as opposed to not using them, is the n...
