Upper Bounds for Heuristic Approaches to the Strip Packing Problem

چکیده
We consider the twoand three-dimensional strip packing problem (SPP): given a set of rectangular items and a strip, find the minimal height needed to pack all items. Rotation of the items is not permitted. We present an algorithm for the two-dimensional SPP, which improves the packing of the well-known FFDH-heuristic and state theoretical results of this algorithm. Furthermore, we prove new upper bounds for the three-dimensional SPP in special cases. Moreover, we present an implementation of the FFDH-heuristic for the three-dimensional case, which is used to construct a new algorithm with known performance guaranty. Based on the new algorithm, we also prove a general upper bound depending on the continuous lower bound and the maximum height lower bound and show that the combination of both lower bounds has an absolute worst case performance ratio of at most 5.

A Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem
In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...
متن کاملAn Exact Method for the 2D Guillotine Strip Packing Problem
We consider the two-dimensional strip packing problem with guillotine cuts. The problem consists in packing a set of rectangular items on one strip of width W and infinite height. The items packed without overlapping must be extracted by a series of cuts that go from one edge to the opposite edge guillotine constraint . To solve this problem, we use a dichotomic algorithm that uses a lower boun...
متن کاملA new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing
Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...
متن کاملImproved Performance Bounds of the COMB-3D Heuristic for the three-dimensional Strip Packing Problem
We present new performance results for the FFDH-3D and the COMB-3D heuristic for the three-dimensional strip packing problem (3dSPP) which were proposed in a preceding paper. There was shown that the absolute worst-case performance ratio of the COMB-3D heuristic is at most 5. In this paper, we prove that this bound is best possible. For the z-oriented 3dSPP we propose an adapted version of the ...
متن کاملSymmetry breaking generalized disjunctive formulation for the strip packing problem
The two-dimensional strip packing is a special case of “Cutting and Packing” problems that arises in many applications. The problem seeks to pack a given set of rectangles into a strip of given width in order to minimize its length. Some applications in which the strip packing problem arises are: Cutting pieces from wooden boards, cutting pieces from glass or steel sheets, optimal layout of ind...
