Costly Contemplation∗

چکیده

We study preferences over opportunity sets. Such preferences are monotone if every opportunity set is at least as good as its subsets. We prove a representation theorem for monotone preferences. The representation suggests that the decision maker optimally contemplates his mood before making his ultimate choice from his opportunity set. We show that our model reduces to that of Kreps (1979) when contemplation is costless and to the standard rational model if the agent has no preference for flexibility. ∗I thank seminar participants at Berkeley, Bilkent, Columbia, Kellogg, Kennedy School, Koç, Northwestern, NYU, MIT, Olin School, Princeton, Stanford GSB, and Upenn for comments and suggestions. PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE∗ A Unique Costly Contemplation Representation

We extend the costly contemplation model to preferences over sets of lotteries, assuming that the state-dependent utilities are von Neumann-Morgenstern. The contemplation costs are uniquely pinned down in a reduced form representation, where the decision-maker selects a subjective measure over expected utility functions instead of a subjective signal over a subjective state space. We show that ...

Improving Financial Management via Contemplation: Novel Interventions and Findings in Laboratory and Applied Settings

The present research tackles two main areas of financial mismanagement, namely avoiding debt-related information and underestimating expenditure. We draw upon research which has shown that inviting people to think about reasons for avoiding something actually serves to reduce the likelihood that they will then avoid it, and potentially improves what they know about it. Therefore, in three studi...

To “ a Unique Costly Contemplation Representation ”

This online supplement provides additional material to accompany the printed paper, henceforth denoted ES. In Section S.1, we review some mathematical background on Fenchel duality used in the proof of the representation and uniqueness results in ES. In Section S.2, we establish the necessity of the L-continuity axiom for the signed RFCC representation defined in Appendix C. Section S.3 include...

The Impact of Prior Decisions on Subsequent Valuations in a Costly Contemplation Model

This paper develops and tests a model of how recall of information from past decisions affects subsequent related decisions. A boundedly rational individual has to determine her willingness to pay for a good that she previously considered purchasing at a given price, or provide valuations for a set of goods that she previously ranked in order of preference. The individual is ex-ante uncertain a...
