چکیده

The present study tests whether age at onset of total blindness and the proportion of life-time without visual experience affect the haptic processing and recognition of tactile pictures in a sample of 20 totally blind adults. We also examine the type of mental strategy (visual, non-visual) used to perform the haptic recognition task. The results indicate that haptic processing of nonfigurative tactile pictures may be efficiently achieved with different levels of visual experience and different strategies in totally blind adults. Interestingly, they also reveal interplays between strategy and the proportion of life-time without visual experience.

Haptic recognition of two-dimensional raised-line patterns by early-blind, late-blind, and blindfolded sighted adults.

We investigated the role of visual experience and visual imagery in the processing of two-dimensional (2-D) tactile patterns. The performance of early-blind (EB), late-blind (LB), and blindfolded sighted (S) adults in the recognition of 2-D raised-line patterns was compared. We also examined whether recognition of 2-D tactile patterns depends on the type of memory strategy (eg spatial, visuo-sp...

Haptic Pictures, Blindness, and Tactile Beliefs: Preliminary Analysis of a Case-Study

Research on the identification of raised-outline drawings (haptic pictures) indicates that blind and sighted individuals process pictorial information similarly. To explain this similarity, the partial overlap hypothesis argues that pictorial representation is constrained by principles grounded on objective shape perception that are shared by vision and haptics. In contrast, the tactile beliefs...

Tactile picture recognition by early blind children: the effect of illustration technique.

This study investigated factors that influenced haptic recognition of tactile pictures by early blind children. Such a research is motivated by the difficulty to identify tactile pictures, that is, two-dimensional representations of objects, while it is the most common way to depict the surrounding world to blind people. Thus, it is of great interest to better understand whether an appropriate ...

Evaluating Performance after Training: the Recognition of Pictures by Touch

The present study evaluated the performance of congenitally blind people at recognizing twodimensional picture by touch, after a 45 hour training. Totally blind individuals served as observers in a haptically recognition task, both, before and after being trained at naming twodimensional raised-line drawings. Statistical analysis showed a significant effect of training with planar configuration...

Using Eye Movement Analysis to Study Auditory Effects on Visual Memory Recall

Recent studies in affective computing are focused on sensing human cognitive context using biosignals. In this study, electrooculography (EOG) was utilized to investigate memory recall accessibility via eye movement patterns. 12 subjects were participated in our experiment wherein pictures from four categories were presented. Each category contained nine pictures of which three were presented t...
