چکیده

The communication performance between reader and transponder in radio frequency identification (RFID) in the ultra high frequency (UHF) range strongly depends on the matching between transponder chip and transponder antenna. To assure power optimization in the forward link the input impedance of the antenna must be the complex conjugate of the chip’s input impedance. In this contribution a measurement method is introduced to determine the transponder chip’s input impedance in absorbing mode versus chip input power. A prematching test setup with impedance tuners assures high measurement accuracy. Additionally, an antenna is presented which is designed to perfectly match the chip. Its input impedance is simulated and measured versus frequency. Finally, the matching between chip and antenna is calculated in terms of a power transmission coefficient.

Sensitivity and Impedance Measurements on UHF RFID Transponder Chips

We present a method to perform accurate measurements in the UHF (ultra high frequency) band on passive RFID (radio frequency identification) transponder chips. Our samples were extracted from commercially available RFID tag inlays. We determine the minimum operating power necessary to get a response from the transponder chip. Furthermore, we measure the chip input impedance in both, the reflect...

RFID ANTENNAS UHF RFID Antennas for Printer - Encoders — Part 1 : System Requirements

This series of articles reviews UHF transmission line antennas developed for RFID Printer-Encoders. It explains the basic operating principles of antennas, their effect on the printer’s encoding function as well as how the antennas influence the design of labels with embedded transponders (Smart Labels). The survey of antennas is preceded by the evaluation of antenna-transponder mutual coupling...

A Broadband UHF Tag Antenna for Near-Field and Far-Field RFID Communications

The paper deals with the design of passive broadband tag antenna for Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) band. The antenna is intended for both near and far fields Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) applications. The meander dipole tag antenna geometry modification is designed for frequency bandwidth increasing. The measured bandwidth of the proposed broadband tag antenna is more than 140 MHz (820–96...

Simple and Accurate Radiation Pattern Measurement of UHF RFID Transponders

In this contribution we describe a simple measurement method to characterize the antenna of radiofrequency identification (RFID) transponders at the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. The transponder that consists of an antenna and a transponder chip is fixed in a rotation apparatus and exposed to a field produced by a calibrated reference antenna. By monitoring the presence of the transponders r...

Prerequisites for Efficient Programming of RFID Inlays in Reactive Near Field

The electromagnetically isolated programming of unique user IDs, into the transponder memory of UHF RFID inlays, is essential for successful operation in the RFID inventory process. Bar code printers enabled for RFID represent a typical environment of such programming. They are usually equipped with an RFID interrogator and a reactive near field (RNF) coupler. Bar code printers, in particular t...
