Contextuality, Nonlocality and Counterfactual Arguments

چکیده
Abstract In this paper, following an elementary line of thought which somewhat differs from the usual one, we prove once more that any deterministic theory predictively equivalent to quantum mechanics unavoidably exhibits a contextual character. The purpose of adopting this perspective is that of paving the way for a critical analysis of the use of counterfactual arguments when dealing with nonlocal physical processes. One of us (G.C.G) dedicates this paper to the colleague and friend Pekka Lahti with whom he had many stimulating scientific and human interactions.

Bell inequalities are a consequence of measurement incompatibility (not, as generally thought, of nonlocality). In classical terms, this is equivalent to contextuality — measurement devices do have a significant effect. Contextual models are reasonable in classical physics, which always took the view that we ignore measurement devices whenever possible, but if that isn’t good enough then we do ...
متن کاملProposal for revealing quantum nonlocality via local contextuality.
Two distant systems can exhibit quantum nonlocality even though the correlations between them admit a local model. This nonlocality can be revealed by testing extra correlations between successive measurements on one of the systems which do not admit a noncontextual model whatever the reduced state of this system is. This shows that quantum contextuality plays a fundamental role in quantum nonl...
متن کاملOn Counterfactuals and Contextuality
Counterfactual reasoning and contextuality is defined and critically evaluated with regard to its nonempirical content. To this end, a uniqueness property of states, explosion views and link observables are introduced. If only a single context associated with a particular maximum set of observables can be operationalized, then a context translation principle resolves measurements of different c...
متن کاملNonlocality, Counterfactuals, and Consistent Histories *
Numerous experiments pertaining to quantum nonlocality are underway or have recently been completed. A certain theoretical defect in the linkage between these experiments and nonlocality is discussed. This defect consists of the use of a reality concept that conflicts with the quantum precepts. This concept could be a hidden-variable assumption, or an Einstein reality assumption. A proof that a...
متن کاملThe Invariant Set Hypothesis: A New Geometric Framework for the Foundations of Quantum Theory and the Role Played by Gravity
The Invariant Set Hypothesis proposes that states of physical reality belong to, and are governed by, a non-computable fractal subset I of state space, invariant under the action of some subordinate deterministic causal dynamics I D . The Invariant Set Hypothesis is motivated by key results in nonlinear dynamicalsystems theory, and black-hole thermodynamics. The elements of a reformulation of q...
