Streaming Algorithms for News and Scientific Literature Recommendation: Submodular Maximization with a d-Knapsack Constraint

چکیده
Submodular maximization problems belong to the family of combinatorial optimization problems and enjoy wide applications. In this paper, we focus on the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function subject to a d-knapsack constraint, for which we propose a streaming algorithm that achieves a ( 1 1+2d − ) -approximation of the optimal value, while it only needs one single pass through the dataset without storing all the data in the memory. In our experiments, we extensively evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm via two applications: news recommendation and scientific literature recommendation. It is observed that the proposed streaming algorithm achieves both execution speedup and memory saving by several orders of magnitude, compared with existing approaches.

Efficient Streaming Algorithms for Submodular Maximization with Multi-Knapsack Constraints
Submodular maximization (SM) has become a silver bullet for a broad class of applications such as influence maximization, data summarization, top-k representative queries, and recommendations. In this paper, we study the SM problem in data streams. Most existing algorithms for streaming SM only support the append-only model with cardinality constraints, which cannot meet the requirements of rea...
متن کاملMulti-Pass Streaming Algorithms for Monotone Submodular Function Maximization
We consider maximizing a monotone submodular function under a cardinality constraint or a knapsack constraint in the streaming setting. In particular, the elements arrive sequentially and at any point of time, the algorithm has access to only a small fraction of the data stored in primary memory. We propose the following streaming algorithms taking O(ε) passes: 1. a (1 − e − ε)-approximation al...

In this paper, we consider the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function subject to a knapsack constraint in the streaming setting. In particular, the elements arrive sequentially and at any point of time, the algorithm has access only to a small fraction of the data stored in primary memory. For this problem, we propose a (0.363− ε)-approximation algorithm, requiring only a single p...
متن کاملStreaming Algorithms for Submodular Function Maximization
We consider the problem of maximizing a nonnegative submodular set function f : 2N → R+ subject to a p-matchoid constraint in the single-pass streaming setting. Previous work in this context has considered streaming algorithms for modular functions and monotone submodular functions. The main result is for submodular functions that are non-monotone. We describe deterministic and randomized algor...
متن کاملCache-Aided Interactive Multiview Video Streaming in Small Cell Wireless Networks
The emergence of novel interactive multimedia applications with high rate and low latency requirements has led to a drastic increase in the video data traffic over wireless cellular networks. Endowing the small base stations of a macrocell with caches that can store some of the content is a promising technology to cope with the increasing pressure on the backhaul connections, and to reduce the ...
