Numerical simulations of jet pinching-off and drop formation using an energetic variational phase-field method

چکیده
We study the retraction and pinch-off of a liquid filament and the formation of drops by using an energetic variational phase field model, which describes the motion of mixtures of two incompressible fluids. An efficient and accurate numerical scheme is presented and implemented for the coupled nonlinear systems of Navier–Stokes type linear momentum equations and volume preserving Allen–Cahn type phase equations. Detailed numerical simulations for a Newtonian fluid filament falling into another ambient Newtonian fluid are carried out. The dynamical scaling behavior and the pinchoff behavior, as well as the formation of the consequent satellite droplets are investigated. 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

LDA Experimental Data of Three-Poster Jet Impingement System
During its near-ground hovering phase a Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft creates a complex three-dimensional flow field between jet streams, the airframe surface and the ground. A proper understanding and numerical prediction of this flow is important in the design of such aircraft. In this paper an experimental facility, used to gather validation data suitable for testing C...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater
Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...
متن کاملDetailed Numerical Simulations of the Primary Atomization of a Turbulent Liquid Jet in Crossflow
This paper presents numerical simulation results of the primary atomization of a turbulent liquid jet injected into a gaseous crossflow. Simulations are performed using the balanced force refined level set grid method. The phase interface during the initial breakup phase is tracked by a level set method on a separate refined grid. A balanced force finite volume algorithm together with an interf...

An accurate and robust numerical method has been developed to simulate turbulent two-phase flows. The phase interface is tracked by the level-set method to capture frequent topological changes due to breaking or merging. Because of the broad-band characteristics of length scales in two-phase flow, a Lagrangian drop breakup model has been developed, which is coupled to the level-set method. In t...
متن کاملStudy of Cylindrical Jet Breakup Using One-Dimensional Approximations of the Euler Equations
We study the phenomenon of pinching of inviscid incompressible jets when surface tension is important. This is done by analyzing one-dimensional models derived by use of slender jet theory. Equations are derived for both singleand two-fluid arrangements. Higher-order terms are retained for regularization purposes. In the absence of a surrounding fluid these equations are the inviscid Cosserat s...
