چکیده

Burgeoning evidence of the formidable mortality consequences of cigarette smoking has motivated life insurers to offer lower premiums to non-smokers. With widely-advertised nonsmoker discounts also available on propertycasualty and health insurance products, the alert consumer is now aware of the economic advantage of being a non-user of cigarettes, even if only temporarily (i.e., when the agent is fill ing out the application).

Carboxyhemoglobin, cotinine, and thiocyanate assay compared for distinguishing smokers from non-smokers.

We compared cotinine, carboxyhemoglobin, and thiocyanate concentrations in blood sampled from 187 cigarette smokers and 181 non-smokers. All three differed significantly between smokers and non-smokers. Cotinine performed best as a test for assessing smoking status, with a sensitivity of 98% as compared with 94% for carboxyhemoglobin and 80% for thiocyanate, all at a specificity of 95%. These d...

Evaluation of Antioxidant Capacity and Cotinine Levels of Saliva in Male Smokers and Non-smokers

Background: The cigarette compounds are associated with the increase in the incidence of oral cancer andprecancerous lesions. Salivary antioxidant system plays an important role in anti-carcinogenic capacity ofsaliva. Cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, has a longer half-life in comparison with nicotine and is a suitablemarker for exposure to cigarette smoke. This study aims to measure total antio...

Comparison of Cotinine Salivary Levels in Hookah Smokers, Passive Smokers, and Non-‎Smokers

Background: At present smoking is considered a great health-related problem. Smoking cigarettes and use of tobacco are on the rise in the Middle East countries; therefore, the number of people exposed to passive cigarette smoke is increasing, too. Salivary thiocyanate levels among tobacco users, non-users, and passive smokers: A biochemical study

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence of tobacco use and its associated mortality is increasing worldwide. Biomarkers in saliva, such as thiocyanate levels, have been shown to be a suitable indicator for smoking. The present study is conducted to determine the thiocyanate levels in saliva and compare them among tobacco (smoking and smokeless) users, passive smoker...

Smoking history and serum cotinine and thiocyanate concentrations as determinants of rheumatoid factor in non-rheumatoid subjects.

OBJECTIVES Smoking is associated with false-positive rheumatoid factor (RF). We explored the dose-response relationship of this association, using smoking history and serum cotinine and thiocyanate concentrations as measures of tobacco exposure. METHODS A total of 6947 men and women aged 30 yr or over and free of clinical arthritis were included in the Mini-Finland Health Survey carried out b...
