Cool tropical temperatures shift the global [ superscript 18

چکیده
The discrepancy between central Greenland borehole temperatures and the isotopic composition of Last Glacial Maximum ice can be explained by a shift in the •5180-T relationship for the hydrological cycle linked to cooler tropical temperatures. This concept is illustrated using a simple Rayleigh distillation model. An estimate for o•=A•5180/AT (LGM-Holocene) of-0.37 %o/øC is determined with a simple graphical technique.

The future of tropical species on a warmer planet.
Modern global temperature and land cover and projected future temperatures suggest that tropical forest species will be particularly sensitive to global warming. Given a moderate greenhouse gas emissions scenario, fully 75% of the tropical forests present in 2000 will experience mean annual temperatures in 2100 that are greater than the highest mean annual temperature that supports closed-canop...
متن کاملThe climate of the Last Glacial Maximum: Results from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model
Results from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model simulation of the Last Glacial Maximum reveal annual mean continental cooling between 48 and 78C over tropical landmasses, up to 268 of cooling over the Laurentide ice sheet, and a global mean temperature depression of 4.38C. The simulation incorporates glacial ice sheets, glacial land surface, reduced sea level, 21 ka orbital pa...
متن کاملEl Niño-like pattern in ice age tropical Pacific sea surface temperature.
Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the cold tongue of the eastern equatorial Pacific exert powerful controls on global atmospheric circulation patterns. We examined climate variability in this region from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present, using a SST record reconstructed from magnesium/calcium ratios in foraminifera from sea-floor sediments near the Galápagos Islands. Cold-tongue S...
متن کاملPoleward Shift of Subtropical Jets Inferred from Satellite-Observed Lower-Stratospheric Temperatures
One pronounced feature in observed latitudinal dependence of lower-stratospheric temperature trends is the enhanced cooling near 308 latitude in both hemispheres. The observed phenomenon has not, to date, been explained in the literature. This study shows that the enhanced cooling is a direct response of the lower-stratospheric temperature to the poleward shift of subtropical jets. Furthermore,...
متن کاملUnderstanding the timescales of the tropospheric circulation response to abrupt CO2 forcing in the Southern Hemisphere: Seasonality and the role of the stratosphere
This study examines the time scales of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) tropospheric circulation response to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations in models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). In response to an abrupt quadrupling of atmospheric CO2, the midlatitude jet stream and poleward edge of the Hadley circulation shift poleward on the time scale of the risin...
