Vertebrate segmentation: The clock is linked to Notch signalling

چکیده
The periodic formation of somites during vertebrate segmentation has been suggested to involve a molecular 'segmentation clock'. Recent observations of cyclic Lunatic fringe expression in chick and mouse embryos link the segmentation clock to Delta-Notch signalling.

The lunatic Fringe gene is a target of the molecular clock linked to somite segmentation in avian embryos
The most obvious segments of the vertebrate embryo are the trunk mesodermal somites which give rise to the segmented vertebral column and the skeletal muscles of the body. Mechanistic insights into vertebrate somitogenesis have recently been gained from observations of rhythmic expression of the avian hairy-related gene (c-hairy1) in chick presomitic mesoderm (PSM), suggesting the existence of ...
متن کاملFaster embryonic segmentation through elevated Delta-Notch signalling
An important step in understanding biological rhythms is the control of period. A multicellular, rhythmic patterning system termed the segmentation clock is thought to govern the sequential production of the vertebrate embryo's body segments, the somites. Several genetic loss-of-function conditions, including the Delta-Notch intercellular signalling mutants, result in slower segmentation. Here,...
متن کاملThe segmentation clock in mice: interaction between the Wnt and Notch signalling pathways.
In the last few years, the efforts to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the segmentation clock in various vertebrate species have multiplied. Early evidence suggested that oscillations are caused by one of the genes under the Notch signalling pathway (like those of the her or Hes families). Recently, Aulehla et al. [Wnt3a plays a major role in the segmentation clock controlling somitogenesis....
متن کاملStochastic Regulation of her1/7 Gene Expression Is the Source of Noise in the Zebrafish Somite Clock Counteracted by Notch Signalling
The somite segmentation clock is a robust oscillator used to generate regularly-sized segments during early vertebrate embryogenesis. It has been proposed that the clocks of neighbouring cells are synchronised via inter-cellular Notch signalling, in order to overcome the effects of noisy gene expression. When Notch-dependent communication between cells fails, the clocks of individual cells oper...
متن کاملReceptor tyrosine phosphatase psi is required for Delta/Notch signalling and cyclic gene expression in the presomitic mesoderm.
Segmentation in vertebrate embryos is controlled by a biochemical oscillator ('segmentation clock') intrinsic to the cells in the unsegmented presomitic mesoderm, and is manifested in cyclic transcription of genes involved in establishing somite polarity and boundaries. We show that the receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase psi (RPTPpsi) gene is essential for normal functioning of the somitogen...
