چکیده

This paper presents a topical review of the current state of the art in modelling the magnetization of bulk superconductors, including both (RE)BCO (where RE = rare earth or Y) and MgB2 materials. Such modelling is a powerful tool to understand the physical mechanisms of their magnetization, to assist in interpretation of experimental results, and to predict the performance of practical bulk superconductor-based devices, which is particularly important as many superconducting applications head towards the commercialisation stage of their development in the coming years. In addition to the analytical and numerical techniques currently used by researchers for modelling such materials, the commonly used practical techniques to magnetize bulk superconductors are summarised with a particular focus on pulsed field magnetization (PFM), which is promising as a compact, mobile and relatively inexpensive magnetizing technique. A number of numerical models developed to analyse the issues related to PFM and optimise the technique are described in detail, including understanding the dynamics of the magnetic flux penetration and the influence of material inhomogeneities, thermal properties, pulse duration, magnitude and shape, and the shape of the magnetization coil(s). The effect of externally applied magnetic fields in different configurations on the attenuation of the trapped field is also discussed. A number of novel and hybrid bulk superconductor structures are described, including improved thermal conductivity structures and ferromagnet-superconductor structures, which have been designed to overcome some of the issues related to bulk superconductors and their magnetization and enhance the intrinsic properties of bulk superconductors acting as trapped field magnets (TFMs). Finally, the use of hollow bulk cylinders/tubes for shielding is analysed.

Assessing the spatial and field dependence of the critical current density in YBCO bulk superconductors by scanning Hall probes

Although the flux density map of a bulk superconductor provides in principle sufficient information for calculating the magnitude and the direction of the supercurrent flow, the inversion of the Biot–Savart law is ill conditioned for thick samples, thus rendering this method unsuitable for state of the art bulk superconductors. If a thin (<1 mm) slab is cut from the bulk, the inversion is reaso...

1 Suppression of Superconducting Critical Current Density by Small Flux Jumps in MgB 2 Thin Films

By doing magnetization measurements during magnetic field sweeps on thin films of the new superconductor MgB2, it is found that in a low temperature and low field region small flux jumps are taking place. This effect strongly suppresses the central magnetization peak leading to reduced nominal superconducting critical current density at low temperatures. A borderline for this effect to occur is...

INVESTIGATION OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF BI2SR2CA2CU3O10+Θ CERAMIC SUPERCONDUCTOR WITH ADDITION OF SILICON CARBIDE NANOPARTICLES

In this research, the effect of addition of silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles on the improvement of the structural, superconductivity, magnetic, and flux pinning properties of high-temperature superconductor Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+θ (Bi-2223) was investigated. The Bi-2223 ceramic superconductor was prepared using the sol-gel method, and silicon carbide nanoparticles were modified by Azobisiso...

Tunneling spectroscopy and magnetization measurements of the superconductor properties of MgB2

Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and magnetization measurements were used to study the superconducting properties of MgB2. The magnetization measurements show a sharp superconductor transition at Tc = 39K, in agreement with previous works. The tunneling spectra exhibit BCS gap structures, with gap parameters in the range of 5 to 7 meV, yielding a ratio of 2∆/kBTc ∼ 3− 4. This suggests th...

Influence of temperature and / or field dependences of the E – J power law on trapped magnetic field in bulk YBaCuO

— Temperature, current density and magnetic field distributions in YBCO bulk superconductor during a pulsed-field magnetization (PFM) process are calculated using the finite difference method. Simulations are based on the heat diffusion equation with account of the heat produced by flux motion, and Maxwell's equations. A power law with temperature and magnetic field dependent parameters is used...
