Nature of the mucosal changes associated with malignant neoplasms in the small intestine.

EDITORIAL COMMENT The author of this paper has again brought up the much discussed problem of malignant disease of the small bowel and its relation to idiopathic steatorrhoea. Whilst agreeing that idiopathic steatorrhoea can be complicated by malignant disease he also feels that malignant disease, and particularly small bowel lymphoma, can produce a mucosal abnormality similar to that found in ...

Malignancy and the Small-intestinal Mucosa.

The observations presented here suggest that malignancy anywhere in the body may be accompanied by a secondary change in the small-intestinal mucosa, including the flattened appearance that is usually seen in idiopathic steatorrhoea. The reverse of this association, that idiopathic steatorrhoea may be complicated by a reticulosis, has been reported by Gough et al. (1962). They described four ca...

Idiopathic steatorrhoea with intestinal pseudo-obstruction.

This is a case report illustrating a disorder of small intestine motility producing gross muscular hypertrophy and associated with steatorrhoea. The literature is briefly reviewed, and it is suggested that in idiopathic steatorrhoea there is ineffectual peristalsis which leads to stagnation of intestinal contents and hypertrophy of its muscular wall.

Morphology and functional cytology of the small intestinal mucosa in malabsorptive disorders and other diseases.

Small intestinal biopsies from 98 patients have been studied macroscopically, histologically, and histochemically, and the results correlated with laboratory and clinical observations. Neither a convoluted nor a flat mucosa can be considered diagnostic for any specific disease. A flat mucosa was found in one adult with intestinal Hodgkin's disease and in another following total gastrectomy. His...
